So I see this guy trying to sit on my 400F!
« on: August 18, 2019, 08:33:00 PM »
I took a couple bikes to my car cruise to display. I'm working in the registration tent and look up to see an older couple hovering around my two bikes, so I walk over to talk. Suddenly (well, he really was slow) unexpectedly maybe, but I notice he's got his feet going and has a hand full of throttle. I'm afraid he was going to topple the F onto the KZ and end up tangled in the mess.
So I said wait a minute, and rolled the F out onto the sidewalk where I can protect it without being mean. The guy and his lady followed me and he threw a leg over the seat (well not really threw because he used his arm and several hops to get it over) and there he was sitting on my 400. I was glad the key was in my pocket cause I think he was searching for it.
Anyway we had a wonderful conversation about his two Indians (one with a foot clutch) and his Modified 47 Harley that he took a friend 110 mph on and taking two girls for a ride at once.  :o  He told me about racing Hot Rods on it and when he sold it to get a new BSA. Of course I asked if he still had any bikes stashed away because if he did I was going to sit on his bike next. He doesn't so I let him and his lady friend escape unharmed. Oh yeah, he said he was 94 years old and I'm pretty sure he had some sort of health related appliance under his clothes. Or he was packing a machine pistol.
I would not be surprised if at some point he was well versed in the use of weapons of war. I wish I had asked.

He did give it a last look and said wistfully, I guess I'm done with 'em.

You were far more gracious than many would have been. Age does not excuse manners many times. I have seen people treat motorcycles in public like it was a dealer’s showroom where it is acceptable to throw a leg over the bike.

I'm not sure if it was good or bad karma but I made a deal to sell the 400F to a guy near Chicago. He's coming Wednesday to pick it up and I'm heading to Davenport with a couple more bikes to try to sell on Thursday and Friday. I had planned to spend the cash on my firebird but that gold K0 tank set at Yamiya is calling my name.  I'm keeping the three K0's and my brothers bought new K4, but the rest is up for grabs.

Don...... well played with the older gentleman. Over 50 years ago,  was at a local car show, in a park not far from where we lived. I was probably 7-8 years old. A guy with a nice old Harley asked if I wanted to try it out? He hoisted me up and my Dad took a Polaroid picture (remember those?). I still have that shot, and from that day on, I KNEW I was getting a bike! I always pick a few kids and sit them in the race car, or on the bike, and make sure their folks take a picture. It’s how it starts, and maybe, how it ends too??

No luck David, I only went Friday. Some tire kickers came back Saturday but I was gone for my grandson's 3rd birthday party.
I sat in a sprint car belonging to Jerry Blundy when I was a kid, he was a local legend on the dirt tracks. He reportedly did a lap or two at Indy but declined the ride. I never forgot sitting in that car so to this day we put kids in the dragster for pictures. One little chubby kid at a car show wouldn't get out. His mom had a terrible time with him. He also pulled the chute on the way out. L0L! One kid got out and his dad asked if he could sit in it too! He did.

Good on you for that Don. I took my son to Perris for sprint cars, very nice bunch of racers. They open the infield at the end of the races, everybody stays win lose or draw to talk with the fans. Even the guys that crashed stay unless they had to go to the hospital. That's the way it should be IMHO.
