Cam chain adjustment question
« on: August 21, 2019, 07:55:13 am »
Hello,

I have read through the forums on different methods of cam chain adjustments and what to do if they are stuck.  I have a cb350f and I am not sure if the cam needs adjusting, I hear a little chain noise but not familiar enough with these bikes to tell if it's too much.  Also, I have a tiny bit of weeping from the adj. bolt.

My question is, what would be the easiest way to replace the adj bolt, washer, and gasket?  Should I do it with the engine running and the cam chain will just self adjust (if not hung up)?  The bike's running great and I don't really wanna mess up the timing if I can avoid it.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

What is stuck? The adjuster bolt? Since you have a steel bolt screwed into an aluminum block, corrosion can be a factor. I would use a propane torch to apply heat to the aluminum.

The factory manual says adjust the chain while the bike is idling at 1200 RPM's, so that is what you should do. If you plan to replace the bolt, you should do that with the engine not running then follow the standard procedure to re-adjust the chain.

How many miles are on the bike?

Note in particular: Sometimes that hinge is stubbornly stuck. Then - with the engine NOT running - tap (not hammer) pin (56) using the screwdriver.

Bankerdanny, The bike has 24,000 on it.  Nothing to my knowledge is stuck, but I hear the automatic cam chain adjustment might be stuck after all the years.

DeltaRider, thanks...I have read your thread and will try it if it is stuck.

Basically just trying to cover my basis and attempt my first ever cam chain adjustment while at the same time fixing the slight seep issue.  It's not leaking, just the bolt is slightly wet with oil.
