Hello, '81 650C Project from Toronto
« on: September 26, 2019, 05:42:00 PM »
Hello everyone, wanted to introduce myself and my '81 650C project that I bought.  I have pretty much zero experience with motorcycles so I might ask some obvious questions.

Little background I'm 24 and just graduated with a degree in mech engineering from a local university.  I wanted to build/restore a bike for a while now and hopefully ride it sometime early next season.  I've had some experience with machining, welding and a bit with minor car maintenance.

About the bike it's an '81 650C that I bought in non-running condition.  Apparently the bike was running before the previous owner started to redo the wiring, probably for a custom cafe style build.  I've looked over the bike and I've identified a couple items I need to complete before I think it'll run including rust in the fuel tank, replacing the petcock, and wiring in a new starter switch.

Anyway wish me luck and I hope to get it up and running soon!

Welcome from Lake Superior,

If you can't find a replacement starter switch, you should be able to find a momentary switch to repair the existing one.  Open up the housing and take measurements.  I soldered a micro switch in mine over 25 years ago.

Nice to meet you,

It actually didn't come with a starter switch at all although I'll double check the box that came with it.  Looking for a replacement should it specify the exact model or just the same functions as the wiring diagram.

In the mean time looking at the wiring diagram I've been told I could test start the motorcycle by connecting red(BATTERY) to starter motor, I assume I can stop it by connecting black/white to black(GRND?).

Thanks,
-JD

Welcome.
650s are known for issues with the CDI system...so, you may want to educate yourself on their issues with the ignitors and other bits in that system and solutions others have used with some Google searches.
