Deformed carb inlets???
« on: October 11, 2019, 08:11:22 PM »
Someone before me put velocity stacks on my carbs, they over tightened the set screws and deformed the carb opening. Does anyone know if this will negatively affect my carbs? How can this be fixed? Thanks guys.

Might  be better to keave them, can be done but you need soft tools,  and if it cracked , you will wish you had left them.

Leave it, I tried to straighten one and it cracked.

 Brass punch can break those.
I would try a wood round bar made of softwood,or plastic, around  or near size of hole. Then cut about a third off the backside, and a bit off the sides. hold carbs with a towel around them between your knees.  then carefully tap the flat spot on the back with the round part  against the damage.

I would leave it.  You can pick up a carb pretty cheap on ebay.  I doubt overtightening did that.  Most likely it was dropped....more than once.

I can assure you that that it was overtightening that caused it, three uniform indentations where the set screws on the velocity stacks were overtightened on each carb, it shows no signs of being dropped.

The odd shape at those locations won't hurt the carb's performance: the flow at full throttle is about 3/4 of the height of the bell (as measured from the bottom) due to the distortion of the airflow pattern by the slide. It just needed to be that big around to fit a hose clamp, for inexpensive production...

I'm thinkin' 754 is right: if you can seal your new air filter system on it, I'd be tempted more to leave it be, maybe apply some JB Weld in thin layers (and sand them back to a round shape) until it sealed in the airbox again. That's a nice winter project. ;)

Thanks for the info Hondaman, btw just purchased your book, and am using it on these carbs as we speak! Thanks for putting out that information for us all.
