Topic: Custom Throttle Cables?

Hey guys,
Bike broke down on me earlier today - throttle cable broke. I have an R6 front end on my bike, so neither the stock cables nor the R6 cables are appropriate. I used a Vehill Custom Throttle Cable kit, which comes with solder-on barrel ends. However, we COULD NOT get the solder to stick (I dont have a solder pot), so ended up having to use some of the clamp on type (which failed).

Now that I have the custom cables and know the lengths and everything I need, does anyone know a good place to have a set made?

Why would front end choice affect cable length?  You are running clip ons I assume.  Clip ons on stock front end or clip ons  on r6...cables gonna be the same length.  I would just order cables for euro market cb750 and if they are a little too long just loop em out front more

All you need for a solder pot is a pipe end cap and propane torch.   I've made cables with a weller 325 soldering gun but the pot works much better.  The parts guys in a shop I worked in during the 70s would make cables while you waited.

..or one of the smaller LEE lead melters for making your own .45 parts...

All you need to do with the nipples is open one side of the hole out to a bigger diameter push the inner through from the small end and form a "mushroom" on the end of the inner that just fits in the bigger hole then fill the hole with solder. Easier to do than describe!

Use plumbers acid soldering paste, and don't be economical with it. Heat with a propane torch or one of those high wattage soldering irons for sheet metal work if you have one - and use plumbers 50/50 solder (NOT lead free). Electronic 60/40 and lead free solder are softer than 50/50 plumbing solder (which may be hard to find now?).
Silver soldering is much better if you have a oxy-acetylene torch plus the flux and silver solder.

Once on my Suzuki i took the end of the cable and crimped a rivet ( w/o steel pin )  with the mushroom side towards the grip stop . It is still on there to this day 10 years later . I also have a high quality crimper  which makes all the difference in the world .  Good luck .

If u still don't feel like fixing yours, motion pro makes custom. I got a quote once. I did not buy them. Seems like 40-50$ ea?
Also, most HD shops either do it, or know of a local shop that does. We still have a leftover 70s custom parts shop for chopper builds that does cables!

 Plumbing solder is mostly lead free these days and has a high melting point. My Weller soldering iron just makes it mushy. 50/50 however works great with a good flux.

Well since my cables aren't run-of-the-mill CB750 cables, MotionPro charges the "custom" rate of $150-200 for a set...

Didn't think to check with harley. Where about are you located? I'd be interested in shipping the cables to a shop if you know of one - my local place just sends them to Motion Pro.
