Broken bolts in original mufflers. Now what?
« on: November 30, 2019, 11:13:40 AM »
Does somebody know the best solution for this? I don't know if this is somehow welded at the inside or that I can get them out making it hot. Thanks! By the way, 500 Four K0/1/2 muffler.

Were they not welded in studs originally?

What do yo mean? I can also just weld the brackets on but that is rather dirty... I don't know if these are broke bolts or broken studs. And, in case of studs, should I be able to get them out by heating and welding something on the studs to turn carefully?

What i meant was i think they are originally studs but welded to the bracket and not sctewed in. You could just drill out the bits and welf in new studdedbar

Ok thanks. Looking around for images I find them all with studs. The only thing I hope is these were just bolted in without any welding from the inside. I will try to get one out. If impossible I put the bracket on and weld it on the bit.

Well, impossible to get them out. All welded from the inside. I managed to drill the 7.5mm hole and made some M8 inside. I guess some copper welding around the inserted stud should do the job. I hope.

I think I would try to drill out and re-tap or use Helicoils.  This is providing you can get a bolt lined up from the back side without frame/etc obstructing it.  Trying to weld a stud will probably screw up the chrome finish.

Finally I drilled them out with 4,5mm and tapped M6 inside. When drilling out bigger there is no "flesh" left for tap. The M6 worked very well and I donĀ“t think they will fall off :-)
