Standard reproduction spring shocks vs Remote Reservoir?
« on: February 29, 2020, 09:14:47 pm »
What is the general consensus on these? Assuming the price is the same, what do you guys think of RR shocks on our CBs? Anything meaningful gained or lost aside from cosmetics?

A set of remote reservoir shocks that are the same price as a reasonable set of regular shocks will likely be junk.

I used the word assuming as part of the hypothetical. Sorry if that was unclear. I just was trying to avoid answers like "well one's expensive and the other isn't."

Someone posted a picture last week on fb of a reservoir shock that hat dropped and broken off the reservoir......the reservoir was fake with no port into the shock..... Be careful what you buy.
I thought I had a picture of it but can't find it.

I don't see why RR shocks would be an improvement over good quality conventional shocks. RR is a benefit for hard working track and off-road bikes. I don't think that there is any real benefit for a 50 year old street bike.

I have FOX Podiums on my race bike because that's what I could get a deal on when I was in the market for something. I've swapped the springs and had them revalved from what they were off the shelf though. The big thing you gain with stepping away from standard shocks is tunability.

Personal opinion (and I say this as someone who tunes suspension as part of their day job), having a reservoir isn't necessary for any kind of riding you'd probably be doing with any bike that qualifies for this forum. You can get quality gas charged shocks without reservoirs that will still allow you to change spring and damping to match what you need, and getting that right will do way more for your ride quality than just simply having a reservoir ever will.

Thanks Ramrod for that awesome explanation. That pretty much answered my question. When searching, I was having difficulty finding info on anything other than car shocks.

What is a good gas shock these days for better handling New England frost heave ladden roads?

Race Tech, Worx, and Ohilins all make quality units that fit this description. Problem is they all come with price tags that likely outweigh their benefit for most street applications (not to mention: you may have to get creative to got one with a clevis lower mount).

They sure do look pretty though!
