My two granddaughters started school today, there were 50 new cases in the county this week. I don't see school lasting long.  They go three days and are online two, I'll be the teacher on the at home days.

Alabama had 500 cases reported at University there. Arizona State University's policy is they will not reveal how many cases they have and then this week they actually shared they had 161 cases in student and staff whom had been tested. I bet they will see Cole to 300 cases a week later, given that the students have been ignoring mask usage and gathering in large groups socializing. Went to a Jazz/funk band's event last week down on 4th Avenue just outside UofAz campus in evening and the eateries were full of students eating and socializing at the food places standing around without masks close to one another. They weren't stuffing their faces, more talking/socializing than eating from what I observed. I wore a mask and kept distance at the outdoor concert. Virus isn't as bad here in Tucson as up in Phoenix area, but people are still catching it and dying...
I keep my interchanges and exposure limited trying to stay healthy and not catch this virus.

I'm teaching a couple of classes for ASU, online, this semester. The initial lack of transparency is something that has been criticized internally, but there are also strong measures in place if people get caught breaking rules, such as in residential halls, or if someone shows up to an in-person class without a mask. Rules and enforcement are there, but it's a bunch of 18-22-year-olds, for the most part, who think they are invincible. They'll gather off campus and party and most won't get caught. There was an "ASU Covid parties" instagram account to publicize parties, although now it's been deleted. ASU went to something like 80% online courses, but they probably should have gnoe to 100%. Still -- there are universities in other places that are not taking as serious precautions. It's a mess.

The shift to online teaching is presenting it's own problems. Because of my connectinos to the institution, I teach online every once in a while for them, when asked. But now the system is overwhelmed. Classes that would normall be 60-70% full are now completely full, with people writing to add. I have 170 students over 2 classes and had to beg for a TA. I got one, and she's great, but if I didn't every single quiz and exam would be multiple choice so that it would be automatically graded. Support has been decent, but my lectures have to be captioned by Disability Resources. It should take a day or two, but I waited 5 for the most recent one. ASU is one of the better universities for online instruction, it's been doing it for years and has a good system in place. I wonder about others who had to make the transition almost immediately back in March or April. My university here is very small, just 450 students or so, and only 35 or so in my program, so it was easy to manage.

I'm teaching a course on Empire in Southeast Asia, pre-colonial and colonial. And an Intro to Southeast Asia. I cut my ties (mostly) to my former home department, Political Science, and just work with Asian Studies and History there.

Well the stage 4 lockdown here in Melbourne seems to be working, we've gone from almost 1300 new cases daily a few weeks ago to just over 100 this week, but sadly around 400 new deaths, mostly senior citizens in nursing homes (including a huge outbreak at one near my place) dropping like flies, very sad.

All this because our state government dropped the ball and used untrained, useless private security guards to enforce the country's mandatory 14 day quarantine programme at 3 hotels in Melbourne, resulting in thousands of new cases, and as mentioned previously, over 400 new deaths. This is not a political comment, it's just what happened, and no one here is arguing that had they employed the police and the army to enforce the quarantine laws for new arrivals from overseas like the other states did, we wouldn't be in this situation, and I'd be riding my bikes, not that I'm pissed off about that...........
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

New Zealand went over 100 days with no reported cases but then we had an outbreak in Auckland (our largest city) a few weeks ago. The Government immediately put Auckland into lockdown and imposed social distancing rules on the rest of the country which has so far contained the community outbreak to a few hundred cases and no deaths. The worrying thing is that they have not been able to identify the source of the new outbreak given we had over 3 months without any cases (reported).
Despite a certain world leader with a bad hair style stating the NZ was in deep trouble again with this outbreak, it is far from the truth.

Putting more miles on the bicycle(600) than the motorcycle (500). Minneapolis has an extensive parkway road system much of it following the river, the many lakes and large wooded parks. These roads have very limited cross traffic and stoplights so they make for excellent urban riding. We would often put 40-50 miles on in the evening after supper.....including a stop for ice cream.  With the pandemiec, biking and walking trails became overwhelmed so most of the parkways were closed to motor vehicle traffic and given over to bikes.  I have never seen so many people out walking and biking.....bike shops could not keep up with the demand and there were long waiting lists for new bikes.  I have little interest in riding the freeways or city streets so the Honda got sidelined with just two rides north to a friends lake cabin. They just opened the parkways recently so it might be time to get a few miles in.

I love that recumbant bicycle mate, I've got one out in my garage that I picked up, damaged, when I was working for the city council's clean up crew. Mine's not built for two though, I wonder if you could remove the back seat when riding on your own and add a pick up bed to do your grocery shopping? ;D

Vision R85 now out of production.  Rans Screamer is very similar and still in production.

The seats have quick release pins for adjustment or removal.  It could be quite the cargo hauler. I think I would get a lot of “static” if I took her seat off.  I am looking at a rack over the back tire so I can strap on a picnic basket.  ;D

The single recumbents I have seen have a short wheelbase so I would think they maneuver quite well. With the tandem I really have to pay attention so I don’t get into tight situations.  Most recumbents have the two steering options.......over or under.

Thanks mate, I must pull mine out of the garden shed and see what it needs, I think it was front ended by a car, so the wheel and front forks were damaged. I don't think the rider survived.
