All the screws on your bike are JIS not Phillips. They have a very different pitch to them. Get JIS bits or JIS screwdrivers and they will turn out easily every time.

That cracked valve cover will now leak. Sorry. Might be able to find someone to carefully TIG weld it up for you, or find a replacement.
