I don't know any powersports machinists. I don't know any machinists in general haha. Although the play that the piston has in the cylinder is what I would consider proper seeming. we'll just have to put it on and find out

Also, let the bike run for a few min to warm up and checked the pipe temps. Cylinder 3 is cold (no sizzle with a wet rag), cylinder 2 seems to be running hot (that's the one that's bluing), 1&4 are perfect.

Here are some pics of the plugs

Electrode side facing up, 4 is on the left, 1 is on the right. Took a few pics at different angles. Hope it's enough to determine anything! Plugs are Champion RA6HC.

Also just noticed the tac cable where it enters the valve cover is weeping some oil.

Pics of ignition system are coming soon

Ignition system. Connections all look good. Black and white wires have been checked and coated with a little bit of dielectric grease.

The ground for the ignition is connected to the frame ground on the coil hanger bracket (red connector)

One more thing, cylinder 3 is verified getting spark. Grounded it against the head and it sparked fine

Those are good pics of the different items Pielz.
I'd like to hear what other members think on this  ;)

Not to well up on dyna, except it seems to either go on forever or piss about a lot. What ohms rating are those coils?

10k, when I got them I tested them and they were bang on. Haven't tested resistance in a while though. But the bike has had only 43 miles put on it since then

Spark can show up like that but fail under pressure.
I don't know the dyna systems, but I would swap plug wire between 2 and 3, if dyna still runs with the wasted spark and see if the problem follows.
they you could try swapping that plug to a different cylinder and see if it follows the plug.

I'm leaning more towards the carbs though.

I need to find a nice little air compressor myself.I had one that operated(homemade)with a small 1 cylinder compressor, small tank and a washing machine motor.I had no problems with that unit for years,it was all on a small base plate.
Pielz,Your carbs are the stock Keihin PD set for the 77-78' ?

Haha! That's incredibly cool. I've always thought it'd be cool to repurpose an old airplane compressor from WW2 or something to use in the shop. It'd definitely be a cool conversation piece.

And yes, they are the PD42s!

Here is my homemade compressor. My Grandpa built it about 50 years ago. I think my Dad told me that it is a refrigerator compressor.

Good idea, Roy. Next time I'm out here I'll swap the plug wires and fire it up and see what happens. Yeah I have a feeling it's carb time :( :(

That's a cool home made compressor though. You guys do some cool stuff! That's an interesting piece to have handed down. I'm hoping I'll be able to salvage and give my grandfather's tools a good home. Maybe he has something like this floating around in his basement lol

So a little update, I swapped the plugs and boots in cylinders 2 and 3 and the problem didn't follow the plugs so it's looking to be a carb issue. Dang it! I'll also check to be sure a valve isn't stuck open. I REALLY hope that's not the case.

Have you checked to see which cylinders are running cool, just that one ?

Yep, just cylinder 3. So a few weeks ago, I vacuum synced the carbs. When I checked, all 4 were heating up evenly. Is it possible that I just really messed up the sync and that's causing one to not function properly? I have yet to pull the carbs but I was just thinking about that this morning. Some time in the last 2 weeks something changed.

I hate to think this(I don't know the 'ins' & 'outs' of Dyna troubleshooting..)but the Dyna unit has been known to fail.
I would first switch plug wires to solid core copper wires, all 4;I had mentioned this earlier.

That's an older Dyna III, which had a good reputation compared to the Dyna s of a decade ago. ;)
The #3 plug looks a bit fouled? Try a new plug..

Good news!! Now that the forum is back up, i pulled the carbs, and cleaned everything. There was a fly in my 3rd carb bowl? I can only assume it somehow was blocking one of the jets lol. Now it runs perfectly even temp across the pipes! I plan to replace the plugs too, may as well. They sat in there all winter. I'm really relieved. Not positive how that fly got in there though.

Good to know it's reliable! It's been really good to me so far. Good strong spark.

Brent,Have you considered installing a set of NGK D8EA(.030-.032"?) spark plugs ? The Champion plugs you took pics of looked like they had a projected tip? and with your hot coils it may glaze deposits onto them and foul them much sooner as they would get hot(depending on Champions heat range?)being closer to the firing zone.
You could install the D8EA's and pull one of them out to check the color later,to check if they're the right heat range. The D9EA is a much colder plug and might be good for very fast riding. This is all depending on how hot your spark is with those nice coils.

Only issue is the D8EAs don't have the nipple end for my plug boots. I guess I could just transfer them from my current ones though! Do you or anyone else know what I'd be getting or missing out on without resistance? My old plug boots had resistance and new ones dont so I figured I'd add it at the plug. I'm fuzzy on what purpose it serves

The resistance was largely to prevent electromagnetic interference. Bad for radio reception of near by cars, and bad for electronic ignition systems. Dr8ea is a resistor plug.

So you're saying I should just go back to a standard D8EA plug and just stick with it?

If you had the resistor boots, but with boots without the resistors, you should get the resistor plugs. DR8EA is pretty much the same plug as the D8EA, but with the resistor in it.

... My old plug boots had resistance and new ones dont so I figured I'd add it at the plug.
You had good instincts there.

So I took the bike out today for a ride and gas was just POURING out of the airbox and drain hoses. Missed my opportunity to ride while I was messing with this.. but I didn't realize the carb drain hoses for 2 of the carbs had gotten pinched in the center stand. Took me too long to notice that After noticing that I pulled them out and the airbox stopped flooding. I took it out on a quick ride and it kept hesitating and feeling a little choppy. I threw the new DR8EAs in and took the air screws out a quarter turn and it rides like a dream. Figured I'd give an update. All 4 cylinders firing, everything seems to be working right.
