Carb mounting ok? - She fired up today!!!!!! Now with AVI
« on: February 12, 2007, 04:06:59 AM »
I have got the carbs on yesterday evening late. I hope to have a first go at starting her (first time in 10 years or maybe more) this week.
Before starting her I am a little in doubt as to how much of the carb throat must be visible/not covered by the boots. I have meassured 2 - 3 mm carb throat visible at the end of the boots. I have taken this picture

I used a luggage strap to mount the carbs since the boot where very stiff and i didn't have new ones.

I mounted the boots to the airfilterside afterwards as the were very soft and could be squeezed in between carbs and airfilterbox. I user a lot of silicone getting it all on.

I hat to be the bearer of bad news but, the boots should be tight to the carbs. Try a heat gun or equivalent to heat the boots some or a shot of silicone spray in the ends of the boots will help.

I'm perfectly aware how miserable these can be when rock hard, as a matter of fact I just picked up a new set of boots from Honda for $7.39(can) each so they're not expensive and believe me are much more supple!

This is just one observation, but with my '78 550k, the boots are flush with carb rack.  I used the same technique (rachet strap) to get them about 90% secure, and then got the last bit on with some elbow grease.  All in all not too difficult of a job.  I recommend trying to pull one end on and notice if there is any difference.

YES that is RIGHT - She FIRED up today - great feeling. For the first time in so many years she startet and ran evenly.

I have been waiting for DPD (parcel carrier) to deliver my new carb boots for more than 21 days now - and the distance is no more than 100 miles. Have mailed and phoned them but it looks like they do an average distance of 5 miles pr. day. They are full of excuses - I am afraid they have mislayed the parcel and can't find it and won't admit it. Didn't have anymore patience with DPD so i tried to start her with the exsisting boots mounted as shown on the photos earlier in this thread.

Had a bit of troubles getting her to start. I had to pull the plugs and clean them  - try starting her again. I had the charger on the battery all the time to have enough charge/current.

Used an old plastic ketchup bottle as gas tank - connected to the carb through 2 different sizes of fuel tubing to even out the differencen in size between ketchup bottle nozzle and carb fuel intake .
I Had no dripping from float houses but I could se that gas was running fra ketchup bottle to carb so that part of carb rebuild worked ok.

Gave it full choke and half throttle and in the third attempt it started. Had quite a bit of smoke from the exhaust but i guess that was from the oil i earlier sprayed into the cylinders through the sparkplug holes.

After a short period of warm up i let go of the choke and she ran fine. Didn't smell to much of gas from the exhaust while running. I could even get her to idle nicely at approx 1100 rpm's. She took throttle very nice even though there was no airfilter on. I guess this points to a bit to rich idle. She got equally warn on all four exhausts so they are all firing. I made a small movie of her firing. It can be seen here http://www.kjellerup-hansen.dk/MVI_0491.AVI. As you can se i had to stop because I got smoke from oil i have spilled on the exhausts.

I guess that i have been very lucky getting the balancing of the carb fairly right through the benchsync.
What a weekend this has been.

Yesterday i was out on the local racing track trying mc racing and today my old cb550k3 started for the first time in many many years. ;D
