CB550 top end gasket question
« on: May 21, 2020, 03:02:51 AM »
So having stripped my K3 down in frame and spent ages trying to get old head and base gaskets off I'm back to reasonable bare metal. Budget has only allowed for fibre gasket replacements (Athena). Should I smear both with a light grease to aid removal and better sealing? I'm buying a tube of Hylomar blue to seal the pucks in, could I use this or should both go in 'dry'. I've seen much debate on this but not sure of the outcome.

Thanks
Richard

Nothing on head and base gaskets, hope you bought a set with O rings!
Normally Hondabond on the pucks

READ THE PROPER HONDA MANUAL VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE FITTING CAM COVER.
if you dont do it right you WILL bend valves and wreck valve guides
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thanks, yes complete set with 'O' rings. pucks, valve seat seals etc.

Noted comment about cam cover fitting. Have read lots of horror stories on this so will take it slowly and carefully.

I used permatex ultra grey on the pucks and copper spray a gasket on the head gasket on my rebuild. Sealed fine

I used a very light smear of Hylomar on the base/head gaskets and on the pucks as well. I have a tiny weep at the o-ring (also replaced when the top end was done) on the #1 side at the base.
