Throttle cable and clutch cable questions
« on: June 28, 2020, 03:30:18 PM »
I have been having problems with my idle that I have attributed to multiple issues. After syncing carbs, adjusting valve clearances, clutch adjustment, and ignition timing. All done twice because my idle hangs. I finally figured that it must be a vacuum leak. Wellllll, I think I may have stumbled onto my problem, as my throttle cable snapped on my way home today. The previous owner had this handlebar and grips on. I remember seeing a similar thread not too long ago and before I just buy new cables I wanted to make sure I got the right ones and I might as well do the clutch cable while I'm at it for piece of mind. Pictures are attached.

I’m not a cb500/550 expert, but Honda throttle cables typically go around the headstock, and then back under the tank. Yours have a very tight first radius and don’t go around. With your new cables, let them run out more around the front and back down the left side. Your clutch cable is also too long, again, let it swing a wide arc around the front, before coming back down the right frame down tube (left and right are sitting on the bike. Throttle tube is on the right, clutch lever on the left.).

You need short cables.
You want the push pull cables loose so the throttle moves a smidge before pulling the carb bell crank.

Thank you, I ordered shorter cables. I'm still new to motorcycles so I wasn't sure what is considered low enough bars and I know these are not clip ons. Can someone point me to the direction of a diagram that shows the cable routing or better yet a few pictures?
