Hello, I'm new and would love some advice
« on: August 14, 2020, 08:45:15 AM »
Hello guys. I'm newer to motorcycles but I have owned a small Honda twin for the past 3 years. I love the thing but I definitely want more power and so I'm looking into Honda CB 650s, 750s, and 900s.

I'm considering buying a CB650 from somebody for around 900 bucks and I would love your advice on the purchase. It seems like a clean bike engine wise and the person said they would get ready to ride for me.

Here's the listing: https://m.facebook.com/marketplace/item/617778862273191/?ref=MESSENGER_BANNER_SEE_DETAILS&showCheckout=false

Pic of my bike below!

That is a beauty little 175.  I too started with Honda twins.  I had a couple cb350's that were beyond my mechanical skill level.  They frustrated me to no end as I was already a decent car mechanic but these required a degree of precision and finesse that working on cars did not require.  I found these cb350's so frustrating that they nearly ended my motorcycling career.  But then I got a cb360 that was in much better mechanical condition and everything fell in the groove so to speak.  And I was hooked.  Until one day a friend stopped by with a cb750 that he had just purchased, offering me a chance to ride it.  My mind was blown!  I had no idea a motorcycle could be so smooth and powerful...and stabil!  The amount of acceleration available seemed infinite.  Just twist the throttle and let the motor sing.  Eventually, I got my own and found them no harder to work on, just more numerous parts for the 4 cylinders.  But the parts were physically larger and it seemed the engine was just more responssive to tuning changes.  When it was right, you knew it!
If it works good, it looks good...

Sean, my experience is much the same (minus the mechanic work). I got this beautiful 175 for a great price and I was satisfied. Had to take it to the shop a few times and was able to figure a few things out on my own. I tried out a CB750 and was blown away. I knew that I needed to get a more powerful bike, but I also am attached to the little 175 and I don't think I can get rid of it. We'll see, I might sell it but I think I need to keep it as it's my first bike.

Steve, I did end up buying it. I think it looks like a solid bike just needs a little work. Carbs need to be clean/tuned but the engine and everything look pretty solid. What do you think after looking at the post?

Looks like a nice 650, congrats.  Did it come with a seat?

BTW - keep the little twin!

I was a day away from driving about an hour to grab the 650 when I got a message that oil started springing on the engine when the seller turned it on in the morning. I didn't end up getting that one, but I did end up getting an '82 CB750 in great condition! I still have my CB175 of course and a experiencing the best of both worlds.
