Paint questions
« on: November 10, 2020, 07:53:39 am »
I am getting near the point in my 74 550 restoration project to look into having the tank and side covers painted.  I know nothing and have no skills in this area so will farm it out to a local shop that does custom work on motorcycles.  For nostalgic reasons I am going with Flake Sunrise Orange since this was the color of the first Honda I owned.  I figured to purchase the paint ahead of time and maybe decals too, then supply them to the shop so I ensure I get factory paint color.
Question 1: Do any of you have a favorite site to purchase the paint?  From my research it looks like vmrpaints.com is a good source.
Question 2: How much paint should I order?  Looks like 1 quart is the standard size.
Question 3: I am looking for the original look, so should I order the decals for the tank or let the shop paint them in by hand if they are confident they can do a good job?

Its not a straight paint its a 3 pack, you need to ask the painter if he is happy to do it, also there is no "standard" code for the paint
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

I used this company. They have Flake Sunrise Orange in a two stage product basecoat and topcoat. I have seen a 74' 750 painted w this product (super nice!). I painted my 75' with the VMR Planet Metallic Blue. I hope this helps.

I used the VMR Flake Sunrise Orange on my side covers and was pleased with their paint.  Worth the price paid.

I am still waiting for a friend to complete bodywork on my tank. I have only painted side covers so far! Some wet sanding is in order due to user error with 2K Clearcoat. Overall the VMR product seemed lay on nicely for an entry level attempt at a quality paint job.

Those look great! Did you order a pint, or aerosol?

Thanks.. I went w aerosol. I used automotive grade primer and 2k clear.  I had a couple of flaws due to the space I painted in.  I would suggest building a temporary booth w plastic sheeting if a paint booth is not accessible. I'll be building a temp booth w exhaust before painting the tank.

750K5, when you paint the tank will you decals for the stripes and then clear over them?

Would that be enough to cover the rear fender too?

I purchased two cans of color and two of clear. I think it depends on how many coats.
