Buy used K & N filters?
« on: February 19, 2007, 06:25:36 PM »
So, I want to buy K & N pods, but I do not want to pay new price.  I've been checking out ebay and found some used ones.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB750-K-N-Individual-Air-Filters_W0QQitemZ150092988417QQihZ005QQcategoryZ35581QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Will these clean up good (like the ad says) and be good filters for years to come or should I not bother?  I know that K & N filters are built to last, but I want to know want you guys that have them think.

No, they are trash.

This type of filter material functions by trapping particles and holding them.  They have crevices that are scarcely as large as the particles themselves.  Cleaning these to as new condition is near impossible as it amounts to a ball and socket arangement within the fibers.

No paper or fiber filter lasts indefinately and must be replaced at regualar intervals.  Only the foam oiled types are truely cleanable to new condition as it is the oil that holds the particles, which is washed away and replenished.

I got new for $100 including shipping on Ebay.  Still haven't decided to use them, as I think the stock airbox may be a better all around choice for all my highway riding in the high desert winds.

Look a little patiently; you'll find some at a good price.

If they had already been clean, I might have said sure. But being as grungy as they are? I dont think so. While everyone says no, if clean, I might have said yes. If they were clean you could tell if they were in decent shape and if so, would be ok for a summer or so till you saved for new ones. However, I don't like k&n filters. To much bad press going around on them. Uni filters seem to be the best choice if you want a higher performance filter than the stock paper. They do not make pods though so you would either have to use an airbox or cut them to fit and make pods.

Huh? !  I've used Unifilter pods for years. Parts Unlimited has them, and probably other cataloques, or the shops that use those catalogues, would hve then too.   About  $70ish for a set of 4.  Plus that filter oil.

Gotta say, though- your bike will run better with the stock airbox if you can get it to work.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Um, haven't we all done that? ;D

Seriously, I can understand the point of getting new but maybe he is like me. I cant just go and plunk down 125 bones at will. I have a budget.  But that is the nice part about the stock box. filters are about 12 bones.

I would buy them. The filter is made of cloth sandwiched between stainless steel screens, the only worry I would have is with the way they've been bent but they don't look too bad. Just get a K&N cleaning/oil kit and they will clean up pretty well and work as well as new once oiled.
There are lots of opinions on K&N filters, as usual with the internet if you search for opinions you'll find lots of people with problems. I've used them for years on cars and bikes and with 350,000 km on a Jeep engine there's no trouble - and that thing did a lot of driving in dirty conditions.
You may not like the way the bike runs with pods, carb rejetting is required and to get them dialed in perfectly can take a lot of trouble. Paying $40.00 and then taking them off would hurt less than $100.00+.
