Cleaning up inside of cases - Kiss offs , sharp edges and such
« on: January 12, 2021, 12:27:13 pm »
Just looking at the inside of a set of 78 750F cases and I realize there is much that could be cleaned up. There are a lot of burs and thin sharp edges around kiss offs (where the molds come together to form holes inside the part) as well as many sharp edges that could be given a 1/16" radius. My limited engineering has it that sharp edges create or are areas of stress.

Do the big foreheads recommend taking a file and sandpaper to the inside? At the very least wouldn't cleaning up the cases make oil flow back to the sump smoother and more efficient?

wouldnt waste any time on this, sohc cases have no known issue of cracking in these areas or oil not getting back to sump efficiently. maybe as a pass time in front of the TV if wifey/GF dont mind :)

I'd do it just because it would bug me not doing it. Especially any flashing that you might knock loose during assembly. I openly admit anything that was going to fall off in the motor probably already has.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.
If you love it, set it free, if it stays it's probably one of my 750's.

Same issue on my 78 cases that I am rebuilding right now! I plan on sanding it down while the cases are still apart and just cleaning the inside real good with brake cleaner for good measure. I would hate to spend all this time and money on this engine and chunks of metal flakes end up circulating in the oil and doing damage.

If there aren't any then don't remove them.
