Please help identify this and it's function on a 73 CB500
« on: January 14, 2021, 10:20:11 am »
This 73 CB500 followed me home last week and I am in the process of cleaning it up.

I am guessing they are luggage rack mounts but one can never be sure...... Anyway, if they are luggage rack mounts, I would be interested to see if one is for sale, or at least know which luggage rack would fit on it.

Thanks in advance!

Sure do look like luggage rack mounts - I took similar off my 77 CB750K - they were for a round bar though. An observation on that is that over time the weight and vibes of the luggage rack cracked the grab bar welds...

I wondered if the CB750 rack would fit on the CB500

Because they are not plated , I suspect  home made. Figure which size square fits and just make a rack.
Is there 2 more on other side.. ?

I believed it was plated, everything is just corroded and rusty now. And yes there are two more on the other side

I've removed many luggage racks in the past and have never run across square tube mounts like that before. I'm leaning towards Frank's homemade theory.

It might be for setting up a board holder so you can cruise down to the beach on your bike to get pitted while hitting some gnarly pounders bro...

They look just like the old board rack mounts my buddy had on his bike.  Do you live around Cali or somewhere by the beach?  He had 2 similar brackets on each side and this weird "W" shaped frame could be mounted to all 4 of the brackets to cantilever the board far enough outboard to be able to, "comfortably" ride.  Totally janky, dangerous, and looked like it was made back in the 70's or 80's but did appear to be produced or maybe only adapted to the brackets.

Edit: the frame that held the board was square tubing as well
