I currently have the four throttle cables sticking straight up and cannot recall where those cables and the 4-1 barrel go in/on/through the frame. Do any of you have any photos of the correct routing? Thanks! John D.

CB750 4-1 throttle cable routing. Try this, service bulletin #15. Up through the hole in the triple tree and onto the throttle tube.

"It's alive"!!   Great work, John

Thanks Steve! All set up to do vacuum sync. My buddy Gary is coming for a “shop day” tomorrow. Will probably wait until then. Received a “new/used” upright for the LF on the race car. We buggered the brake mounts on the old one (cracked when we tried to straighten). Probably swing over to that this aft…..

Spent ages this am getting that freakin’ 4-1 throttle cable and all the slides set in correctly. The mechanics that serviced these early cb750’s must have cursed this set up endlessly. Their feedback must have been much less than complimentary…… No surprise that Honda quickly changed over to the “lifting bridge” throttle assembly for the K1!

Good news; the shop is incredibly comfortable. That little AC a unit in the wall is extremely quiet and on the lowest fan speed setting it keeps the shop coolish and best of all sucks out all the humidity.

Thanks Bill! I’m off to a friends next week, to tackle the seat. He used to run a Hospital machine shop where he made OR tools, modified hips and knee replacement parts (during surgery!) and made all sorts of braces and orthotics. At one point he was making custom skates for 1/2 the Toronto Maple Leafs! He’s a wizard with leatherwork and upholstery……. That, and getting back my tank from the “paintless dent removal” guy, are my only hurdles.

At the first Honda shop where I worked, they sold the first CB750 they got to the banker at the bank that financed the shop. He'd never ridden a bike before (and he was all of 5' 7" tall). After the shop manager spent half the day with the guy, the banker rode off. In 2nd gear. He lived 8 blocks away. Every day he fired it up, holding the clutch in, rode it to the bank (9 blocks), parked and locked it (still in 2nd gear) out in front of the bank. Every evening he rode it home that way, too. Every 2 weeks it came in (to me) to have the sparkplugs replaced (black as coal) and the carbs rebalanced (again, and again, and again...). They were always 'off' a little bit, mostly on #4. That one cable got better when Honda came out with the throttle cable that had a longer #4 short cable. I got to replace that, too. When Honda came out with the 'improved splitter tube' version (it was longer) I got to replace it again. The new cables stretched even more than the original versions: about 2 weeks after the 2nd time it came in for plugs and rebalance I moved to Peoria and Brown's Sport Cycle Center instead.

Yeah. The early 4-cable splitters were a mess. Today they seem to be better made.

Sync’d the carbs this afternoon. After struggling for ages with the bench sync and the infernal 4-1 throttle cables, it only took a few minutes and it’s running spectacularly well!

The ignition timing, I set earlier with a test light, was spot on. A very good day…. Carb drain hoses, airbox and then seat rebuilding are next on the list. My target of the Cobble Beach Concours in one month is looking more realistic every day.

Good news John!

BTW, how far away is the Cobble Beach Concours from where you live ?

You planning to drive the bike or haul it?

Denis….. Owen Sound is about 2.5 hours N.W. from my place. The venue is a spectacular golf course and high end community, right on Georgian Bay. It’s a pleasant drive. I’ll probably take it up in an enclosed trailer so I don’t have to do a lot of polishing on the Sunday morning! Check it out: cobblebeachconcours.com

They have a fantastic “Exibitors Dinner” in the main club house on Saturday evening. My wife has missed it the two times I’ve been, but wants to attend this year. The entire event is over three days, but we’ll probably just head up on the Saturday. It’s on a par with Pebble Beach and most of the Exibitors are from the USA. The cars arrive in tractor trailers and are overseen by “handlers”…… Really way out of my league, but very entertaining.

The best part is the fellow that built the place (with his Dad), and created the event,  was my best friend in grade school for +12 years. Our paths never cross these days, so it’s great to see him there!

Unfortunately the clutch is not releasing. I’ll try a few more heat cycles, but more than likely, it will have to come apart. Life goes on…..

Clutch should be easy enough to sort out, glad the list of things left is manageable. Hope you and your wife enjoy the event this year and your bike shows well... I am certain it will.

Thanks David. It’s meant I’ve spent more time in the shop than riding this summer, but that’s OK. This project has dragged on for too long and the deadline made me get moving. J.

Finished up the air box (new filter), vent and overflow hoses, and ignition key bracket clamped down. That’s it! Seat and fuel tank and then I can just sit back and look at it.

Special thanks to “James H” for remanufacturing the clamps for manifolds and air box. They are identical to the originals and really look terrific!

…………Unless I have to seperate the clutch plates by getting in there!

Hi John,I hope the PDR guy brings your tank back and the clutch plates break-free under hard-snap acceleration.  :)

I’ll do the seat next week (my wife comes home late tomorrow and I have a LOT to do between now and then) and it that goes smoothly, I’ll probably just open it up.

I did, but “as found”. After, pulling the top end and building carbs, it was good to know I just improved it! No rattles, smoke or leaks!
