Did you try Flitz on the frame paint, any bare areas can be oiled.. it actually  looks pretty good..
Powder coat.. that will kill the original  bike vibe...

There’s just too much paint missing. There certainly wasn’t much to start with. Almost no coverage in some areas.

Yes John, well I can attest that the welds on my 120XXXX look  like they were done by a 4 year old, so Honda didn't get it's sh1t together until at least the K1, methinks? Get your frame blasted and paint it, don't powdercoat it, powdercoat doesn't look like anything that was available back then, it's also expensive, and if you chip it (very easy to do when you pull out/install the engine) moisture will get underneath it, and lift it. like it's done on my F2s frame. It's also an excellent insulator, so you'll need to grind it off your earth lead point/s, or your electrics will drive you insane.

Rustoleum gloss black rattle can paint is fantastic, I get my frames blasted, wipe them down with "wax and grease remover" replace the swingarm bushes with bronze ones, and go to town with the Rustoleum. It looks as close to original as anything I've used, (and I bought my first CB750 new) is cheap (just like the crap that Honda used) needs no primer, and is easy to touch up if you scratch it. Over here a can of Rustoleum costs around $8 USD, so for 16 bucks you'll have enough to paint your frame, swing arm, battery box, top and bottom triples, engine mounts, stands, etc.

Or pay thru the nose for powdercoat which is neither authentic, or as durable as good old paint. Oh, and wear a mask, nothing worse than blowing your nose and producing black snot for several days. Makes you wonder how much went into your lungs............ ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Beautiful! My K0 bitsa is being delivered tomorrow evening, and from the pics the rear fender appears to be in reasonable condition, so one less thing I need to buy! ;D

That fender is like a K1 fender, right?

I have a NOS on the shelf plus early front fender (K1 -early K2) almost like new.

Upon that a rotten K1 bottom end plus good cyl+ head.
Extra wheels too.
K4 tank-side cover set with fresh   paint, stock style.

K2 frame with registration...
Swing arm in a friend's hoarder barn.

Just find the rest. ;D

No, not a K1 fender Per, close, but one less hole, which makes it all so much more desirable for a K0 owner, John seems to have a line on very rare K0 parts, that fender is probably worth more than some bikes I've bought! James H has come to my rescue with a K0 engine bottom end and head, which is very close to my frame number, so my next K0 will be a 1969 diecast with the appropriate numbers, which is exciting, having a 1969 and 1970 K0.

I'm just waiting on John to tell me how much I have to ask Satan for my soul, so I can buy his spare K0 carbs. I'll probably never own a sandcast, but happy with the next best thing. ;D

OK, I had to look at my K1 fender.
Yes, 3 holes. I'm sure a K0 inspector will look for this detail ;)

There are actually many differences between the various versions of the K0 (3 or 4 different heads, different carbs, different cases, fenders, brake calipers, disc rotors, cranks, gear shift mechanisms, speedos and tachs, etc etc) before the K1 came along Per, it's amazing how many changes that were made in only one year. ;D

Terry is so right.... There are groups that have documented almost 100 differences in those early bike. Some of it is pretty obscure, but interesting. I’m learning enough about it to make sure I don’t inadvertently obliterate some original detail. Working on the engine a few days ago when I realized it’s #582, and the last guys to touch it were the builders. Neat......

Even if most of the changes made it better that should increase value, it is the other way for collectors or just people bitten by the CB bug.

I had sandcast #572. There was a lot of changes between it and end of sandcast  around #7414.  At least 35 if not closer to 50 . I had counted at one time.

I hate to say it, but I think you are paying  money to make your bike less desirable.?
 But its your choice.?
You went from one of perhaps a few dozen original condition  bikes left in the world, to
one of several  hundred semi restored ones....  those are  far easier to find..

For black parts I’m a POR 15 fan with their chassis black top coat. I think it’s better than powder coating. Repairable too.
Very easy to use, self leveling, great finish profile.

Frank..... I’m not going to install a new set of tires and tubes on a scabby, flaking, “tear your fingers off”, set of rims. They need replating. Found a platter that will add “Whitener”, no show chrome. The frame is +50% rust covered, so I need to do something. Otherwise, I planning to use every single, original piece. How many bikes do you have with original 4-4 pipes?

I did find used no number pipes for my sandcast.
The guy I got it from said they were probably still there, under a large pile of wood. I had planned to go back and move the pile to search  if he let me. But then I heard short time later  , he had passed away. He had in fact not passed away I found out later..but I found a set..
What a lot of guys do is clean up the frame , oil the bare spots, polish the paint and they don't keep rusting.
Bikes from the 20 ,s and teens, with only remnants of original paint.. like 1/2 gone ... are consistently  bringing far more money , than the restored ones.. people like to see a wondow into the  past. .. a piece that truly survived..
Most old frames get repainted... we can not count how many we have seen .. it is sterile and all looks the same.. except when they use powdercoat... which most people know is incorrect... and looks different..
I don't think it's a bad idea to run replated rims, but we have not see  yours up close.
This has been happening  in the field of collectables for decades , it  is not embraced  by everyone,  some not till it's too late.
I have a buddy that has owned 3/4 of the most desiireble gas pumps  on this continent..
He confided later  he wished he had heeded my advice.. and admitted he got far more enjoyment from the original condition
pumps.... every mark ,every scratch. .. tells part of a story..  new looking does not.

But hey I apologize,  it's your bike.. ... I will try to stay out of jt... from now on..

Spent an entire afternoon sweating off the pipes. Determined not to damage them as they are the originals. A few holes, but nothing that can’t be repaired. Soaked the spigot joints for a few days and then used a very soft, old 1” ratchet strap wrapped around the fork legs  (front wheel, frame and motor are still clamped up on the table) and top bend. Small tension increases on the strap, and lot of wiggling and all 4 came off! Used the manual impact driver to loosen all the cover screws, pulled the oil lines, and drain plugs. Left it all drooling into a big drain pan.

My buddy working on his old TransAlp missed his “shop day” this week. Next visit we’ll pull it out.

Yes, it is a difference between patina and a non maintained bike slowly rotten up.

Sandblast and new paint.
2k paint will match the stock style better.

Imo .. most of that is not visible , I expected far worse.
Yes it doesn't look nice but I would knock the worst off with steel wool, scotchbrite , or wire wheel . The  oil it and wipe it down good...... then have a look ...  I mean with seat  and side covers on , a lot won't be visible..
You can always still paint it later. . But once you do , you can't go backwards....
If you don't like it, you haven't lost anything.

There is a lot of people paying good money , to get their brand new paint to try to look like this.. to get a fake patina vehicle.
Check out the handlebars on first bike, and crashbars on first two...  original paint looks like, enjoying  the outdoors... These are 22 or 22 years old r r than yours..
There's something about not having to baby your bike , that can make for a far more relaxing experience.   It is after all 50 years old..
