loud popping noise while running 1978 cb550k
« on: June 12, 2021, 01:02:00 PM »
I have this loud popping noise when the bike is running. It did this when I bought it from the PO who told me it was due to the type of exhaust so I didn't think much about it.  I just finished doing a complete top rebuild with new rings, seals etc and it is still making that noise.  Is it from the exhaust or something else?  How do you fix it? Thanks

Pods and a wide open exhaust and you tink it will run likw factory?
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Can’t tell from the video - is the popping coming through the exhaust?  If so, I just got my 750 running again (engine swap) and I get that same kind of sound. Although not at idle. At around 2000rpm it starts. Just a continuous, but uneven, popping in the exhaust. My first guess is mine is too rich, from the fact I get puffs of black smoke when I snap the throttle up to 3000 or more.

Curious what your problem turns out to be.

Nope bryanj at no point did I say that I was asking a question on if it was because of that or something else.

"That's like saying it ran when parked"

You will need to be methodical and go through every area to see what helps and what doesn't in each section of carburation and electrical. It could be anything from a dirty carb circuit issue with a partially clogged slow speed circuit or jet. It could be an electrical issue with in intermittent coil/wire/plug cap or plug.

Running it like that with an open exhaust and pods will create its own issues, which could be the cause or something elsewhere on the bike.
