CB550 hub and Borrani rim
« on: June 29, 2021, 06:17:01 AM »
I’m trying to lace a rear wheel with a 550 hub and Borrani aluminium rim. Should I have standard spokes or do I need custom length?

You'll need the 'effective rim diameter' to calculate your correct spoke length for your hub.

Here's a link with a very good explanation and a spoke length calculator that works well:

Thanks! I used another calculator and got about 5mm to long spokes. Exactly the difference with earlymotor-calculator. $40 wasted…

Yup. Before I used this calculator I vetted it by measuring a couple of stock Honda setups, it was good to 1/2 mm which was probably due to my measuring error.

There are ebay sellers that sell spokes made to your spec, gauge and length, but I suspect end angles will differ from stock. I'll try them eventually.

So you are saying a Definite difference in diameter .. where the spokes enter the rim ?

Years ago, I put one on the front of one of my cb750s and used the stock spokes. Added washers under the nipples (like those used on my GL1000). Then  ground the extra spokes off at the nipples where they poked out a bit, under the rim band. Bit slow, but worked well.

I'm not ignoring you Frank, just not sure if you were talking to me or what you mean.

All rims are different.
