Topic: Anyone in the Bay Area know a good shop to port/polish

Wondering if anyone knows of a good shop in the Bay Area, which can do some port/polish work, as well as install a new cam in a 550?

As much as I’d love to tackle this myself, I’d be working in the street, so prefer a shop would just have for this one.

Get a used 500 or 550 head and send it to mreik as he does a fantastic job, he needs the intake manifolds as well

Still need a shop to install the cam. I’m looking around for a garage too, but in reality, that sill be hard pressed.

Fitting the cam is easy its all part of the reassembly

With zero experience it can be done but you ideally will have some mechanical aptitude and need to follow instructions well. Also, 550 and 500s need to loosen the adjusters and rubber band the rocker arms up when installing the cover so you don't accidentally bend or break something, which is apt to occur if you do not assemble it correctly. It is referred to as the rubber band trick, if you care to search for it. MRiech MRieck (sorry Mike) does excellent quality work on heads and valves, knowing the SOHC/4 motors very well and is able to produce excellent results. Definitely not true for just any shop, actually few shops understand the SOHC4 motors half as well as Mike.

Also, is it possible to do this job with the engine in the bike? Just tank off? Or does the engine need to come out?

Yes we are, i have a head done by him and its a work of beauty also yes top end comes off in the frame on a 500/550 BUT download the genuine manual and read it several times before you start---especialy the bit about refitting valve cover mentione before
