I know that Europe was different. But the poster is in Kentucky, so his bike is an F2

Hey guys,
Ive been picking up some NOS gaskets from ebay. I got my head gasket in today, and there is some cracking of the membrane around the small hole in the middle of the gasket (the underlying fiber membrane is in tact).

The seller does have a 30-day return policy. Should I request to return it, or do you think this will be okay? (The cost was ~$83 after shipping  :-X). Dont know how that compares to average cost.

Here are some photos.

If you apply some Hondabond 4 or Permatex#2 on the top and bottom of the gasket where it is cracked, it will likely seal up OK.
It's interesting to see a real-life asbestos-based head gasket these days!

I was thinking that too but when you say 'some'...... Use it sparingly so it doesn't get into the oil galleries.....

Thanks HondaMan! I'll be sure to seal it up asbestos I can!

Also, I noticed in your book that you used bright orange colored O rings for the large 61.8mm O-rings around the cylinders. I saw Hackaweek used similar O-rings in his build. Do you recommend those for any reason over OEM ones? I got some NOS ones in the mail yesterday.

Also, where could I go about getting those other O rings for the oil passeges you'd mentioned before (in addition to ones between the cylinder and the head, it looks like you also used them inside the cylinder base gasket)?

Sorry to be 'out' for a while. Been lookin' for work and moving bike parts around. :)
The bottom 2 O-rings are often pink in the kits: these 2 only are silicone-based O-rings. You can tell the difference between those and the regular Buna type: they feel spongy and bouncy when you squeeze them, like between a thumb and fingernail. While it's not dritical that they be used there, they will outlast the Buna ones, and in most cases the old OEM one is still fine to use if your gasket kit doesn't have them. The Vesrah kits sometimes do, sometimes don't, not sure why?

PM me for a pair of the bigger upper cylinder O-rings. I send them out for a donation to our forums.

Well, I haven't bought a kit. Decided to get everything piecewise - all OEM honda parts.

Are the 'bigger upper cylinder O-rings'  you are referring to #8 on this diagram? These are the ones for the oil passages right? And the bottom 'pink' ones you were referring to are #6? I got 2 of the #6 Orings (Honda 5.5x3mm), so hopefully they're the right ones.

I also bought replacements for parts #4 (cylinder base gasket), #7 (large sleeve Orings), #3 (dowel pins), and #2 (cylinder stud sealing rings - the tube shaped ones).

For the head/cam, Ive picked up the head gasket, cam tower seals/discs, cam roller/slider/tensioner/ear cover things.

Am I missing anything mission critical apart from the valve guides/retainers/springs and whatever I find I need for the pistons once I get into the thing?

Sorry to revive an old thread - but I finally got the time to pull the engine over the weekend. Sleeves appear to be pretty pitted in several places (probably caused me to burn oil - which would explain the smoky exhaust issue ive always had).

My friend, who  is a diesel mechanic, was of the opinion that the pitting is pretty substantial and recommended I have the sleeves bored and honed.. so gotta tack that on to my shopping list.

What's the normal if you have to bore your sleeves out some? is there a certain amount that you can make up for using rings? or do you always have to go up a piston size as well? OEM honda pistons are scarce on ebay.. let a lone a set of 4.

My plan for now is to call CycleX tomorrow and see where theyd be at. Last time I called, they didnt seem to think highly of the bronze valve guides - so he may spit in my face if i tell him thats what I want...

Plan on having them quote:
1. Head resurfacing
2. Valve guides
3. New Valve retainers
4. Bore and hone cylinders

In the mean time.. just have to continue the internal struggle regarding the bottom end "to split the cases.. or not to split the cases..."

Here are some pics of the sleeves:

You CAN NOT just use rings as piston to bore clearance is critical you must overbore with piston kits, on the 750 cruzinimage seem to work ok but pistons change by engine model.
Also the rebore needs to be done by somebody who understands Hondas as the piston to bore clearance is very small and most car/truck type shopes dont understand this and bore too big
