GL1000 electronic ignition identification
« on: November 02, 2021, 07:26:48 PM »
This is the electronic ignition on my gl1000. The bike runs but I'd like to know what kind of electronic ignition this is? I'd like to find the instructions for it so I can make sure it's set correctly.

Found the answer. It's a prestolite.

Think member Terry is pretty familiar with the Prestolite system and they have been around a long time. I've got one for a 750 packed away somewhere I took off an old engine.

Yep, it's a Prestolite. I had a few NOS CB750 units years ago, no idea where I put them, maybe I sold them? They were very "Low rent" systems, and I don't think they'll ever be collectable, but if it's still working, that's great, it'd be at least 40 years old. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Still working. I did the timing belt, valve adjustment, coolant change, oil change, u-joint service, new tires, brakes rebuilt, carburetor rebuilt and pressed the starter button. Bike fired after little hesitation but it hasn't run since early 90s. I'm glad the prestolite is working. Saves me a lot of headaches trying to figure out what's wrong. I found the instructions for it but I'm not sure if I want to start playing around with the current setup. I'm going to leave well enough alone and maybe check it with dynamic timing.

My friends has the same one. We set it so the total advance is right on. At idle it’s a bit advanced, but runs well. Years ago he sent his carbs to a guy in the USA. “Pistol Pete”.

Unfortunately, Pete is no longer with us. We thought his kids would carry on the business, specifically Moose his daughter, but it appears that his excellent service passed with him.

Truly sad. Pete did a set for my ‘76 GL1000 about 20 years ago. Best money I ever get spent! Quite a character. RIP.
