I got the cylinders back yesterday, they were bored to 77mm for a set of R1 pistons.
Need to finish a V-Max and a GS(X) 1100 engine before I can pull the Yamaha engine and start working on it.

Well, pulled the FZ engine and took it apart. One race away from complete destruction  ;D
2MG rods were pretty much done with the beating, small ends very loose and pistons hitting the head.
Three pistons had parts missing from the skirt etc.
We had a former Pro rider race this contraption back in 2022 for one weekend and he really gave it the beans. Being used to 600cc super sport bikes he said he had the revs between 9K and limiter basicly the whole weekend  ;D
I even raised the limiter 400rpm to 11600 so he could have a slightly wider operating window.
This engine loves revs and made 125hp at the wheel with 11200 limiter and the curve was still climbing at a rate of close to 1hp / 100rpm.

Built back in 2018 or 2019 and was used for classic racing and trackdays for a few years and I knew the rods are our weak link so I asked the owner if I can upgrade the engine with stronger rods and 50cc more displacement.

As I write this I just fitted 2005 R1 pistons to 2001 R1 rods, not a straight swap but easily doable.
Small end of the rod is much stronger compared to stock rods and to my calculations we could theoretically rev this thing as high as 12800 to reach the same piston speed the early R1 has.
Wanting to keep it safe I'm planning on raising the limiter bit by bit on the dyno to see when it starts to run out of steam.

I was asked about the cams etc. etc after a YZF 750 classic superbike (engine built by a pretty famous engine builder who works in MotoGP) couldn't pull away from our ancient FZ. I just said I mixed some old crap in a bucket, shaked and put it together  ;D

We have had zero issues with the transmission, clutch was slipping but EBC aramid plates and stiffer springs cured it.

Slightly shorter rods and lower pistons + untouched cylinders. I had the cylinders decked 0,4mm so that's about... you do the math, I'm into metric system  ;D If I use the stock base gasket, squish is about 1,2mm and without it 1,0mm so right where I wanted it. 77mm bore and high revving engine with Imatra in mind... better stay on the safe side.
Some of you might even know what I'm talking about when I mention Imatra (Mike? ;D )

Next step is to have the valve pockets match the head.

I also had to make some room in the cases for rod bolt nuts as they are the other way around. FZ and FZR have them upside down so there isn't much room left anywhere. A bit of grinding and rum did the job.

Forgot to mention I did a little port matching and seat blending (I think that's the right term) as they were far from being centered in the ports. I hope I didn't mess the head up too bad  ;D

Valve problems solved but our daily driver developed a bad smoking habit so FZ was pushed forward a bit.

That's up to the owner but he is aiming to get on the dyno in a week or so and if all goes well the new rider for the bike will test it asap.

If work allows I'll try to shoot a video from the dyno and post it here. Hoping to see 130rwhp, we have numerous dyno runs with different engine versions and carb setups on this particular dyno so it's nice to compare stock numbers to 911 and 911 to 961 engines.
