I don't know much about San Francisco having successfully avoided it like the plague all these years, but if those minimum temps were recorded downtown as stated, temperatures could have well been much lower in outlying areas.  I see that here frequently.  Official temperatures recorded here for Boise are at the airport.  We see actual temperatures here at the house vary widely from what the "official" temperature is, usually lower.  Buildings and asphalt hold heat.

Same here.  In Austin, they do 2 official temp reading, one near Downtown and the other at the Airport, approx 15 miles away.  The airport is in a low-lying, rural area and typically is 3-5 degrees colder.

Feet on the back pegs will divert a little engine heat up towards your body, it lingers behind the windjammer and feels pretty good when you get it right. I even took the oil tank cover off to soak some warmth off of it. It was about a 15 mile commute.

Was on a bike trip to Wyoming and it started snowing...in June!! We would stop periodically and do jumping jacks on the side of the road to warm up.  [ended up getting a motel that night]

San Francisco is at the tip of a peninsula, surrounded on three sides by a tremendous amount of thermal mass: the Pacific ocean. There is also a current that flows from South to North drawing warmer water in the winter, so the temps along the coast tend to be mediated. Sunnyvale and Milpitas are both at the South end of the peninsula, in close proximity to the South bay. I could smell the ocean from the parking lot at work at 2:00 AM. To be honest, 35* with fog and humidity is freaking cold. I got out of there as soon as I could, and ended up on the edge of the Mojave desert, where it can get really cold.

My Czech friends get together every winter on Jawa's, CZs, Dneprs and Urals at a specific camp site.

San Francisco is at the tip of a narrow peninsula surrounded by temp stable ocean and a huge bay where water dominates the temps.  San Jose and Sunnyvale is not, and inland by many miles. The weather climate there is not like SF.   So, based on Scottly’s unawareness, I guess I have to call you on your fiction that you actually lived there, and providing misinformation about my experiences to somehow make you feel superior.  You sure you weren’t actually in LA or Hawaii, or maybe Sunnyvale Tx?  Aliens sometimes transport people I’ve heard.

Even if your story about riding at city speed limits ten miles at 35F in a tank top and sandals in full sun and arriving all toasty isn’t a fabrication , riding 40 miles at 65-70 mph before dawn, provides quite a different wind chill factor at 25-30F. 

I don’t know what game you are playing Scottly, it just seems pretty silly to me right now.  But, that seems to be the political climate for the entire world in this era, so thanks for playing.  Let’s go Brandon!

This reminded me of my Apple warmer, it velcroed to my helmet and tucked into the helmet. Black quilted nylon with some sort of insulation inside. I had to crack open the visor to control fog on the lens sometimes.
 For some reason I left it in the garage and mice got it.

Many years ago in my military days,  I rode my 750F1 from Gutersloh in Germany to Zeebrugge in Belgium in winter to catch the ferry to the UK. 280miles. Trip started at -10c but at Zebrugge it was only -3c. The bike ran faultlessly as always, cruising at about 90mph. Unfortunately I had no fairing, just electric gloves and thermals, leathers etc. Only my feet suffered😃

Wow! I could never have survived that. I can understand you moved to Saudi to recover.

I do not ride in freezing temperatures due to risks of slippery roads with high crash risk.
Enough in spring when frost can still cover roads partly where sun not yet has warmed up after night frost. Typical country roads with forest beside the road.

Another thing with my mopeds when I was 14-16 yo. -20C and lots of snow did not stop me. They all were modified to reach 65-80kmh.
Allowed max speed was 30, most of them did 40kmh as stock.
