1981 XV1000 TR1-project
« on: February 05, 2022, 03:58:56 AM »
My current project, 1981 XV1000 TR1.

Started out fairly stock with a luggage rack and a rusted out exhaust.

So far I've made a new stainless exhaust, new subframe, laced up CB750 wheels, stainless battery tray, footrests etc.
Dry weight is down from 220 to 180 kilo as it stands right now, without electrical harness, seatpad and carbs.
The goal was to keep it under 190 kilo and that looks doable.
Right now the plan is to get drivable before this summer and spend next winter on engine rebuild and finish/paint.

Cheers
Dan

And the nice tooling in the shop to do it right. Looks good all slimmed down into kind of a flat tracker look.

Converted from 630 to 530 chain using an 18 tooth XS650 front sprocket that needed a oneoff lock washer:

Will run electronic speedo so speedo drive was ditched and an adaptor to correctly space the Yamaha discs on the Honda hub as well as hold a seal was machined.
Stock discs was drilled.

Footpeg brackets milled from 10mm aluminium plate. Footpegs retain stock placement, mods done only to reduce weight.

Made a battery tray out of 16 gauge stainless to hold a lithium battery weighing 0.9 kilo. Stock battery is 7 kilo...
Battery will reside under the swingarm.

Heatshield milled from 16 gauge 2.5" inch pipe. Also 304 stainless which is horrible to machine but it worked.

10 years ago or so I was tracking an XV920 at a local bike wrecking yard and sales operation. This was before the XV Cafe conversion thing. I still regret not pulling the trigger. I haven't seen another of the chain XV's in 5 or 6 years.

You are very talented.

I was thinking quite the same thing. I aspire to be this proficient with a lathe and mill.
Thankful for everyone on this forum. Grateful to continue to learn so much.

I think it was Billy Joel that had one they made into a Vincent look-alike. I shopped for monoshock Viragos for a while after seeing that one.

...and the wiring loom was dragged out, weighed, and fitted.
Stock weight is 1,5 kilo but it will probably be a few grams lighter when I'm done with it.
This is not my favourite thing to do, but it the next step and it cant be avoided so...

I have a similar scale, and I was impressed with it's accuracy at very low weights: I weighed a 750 kick start lever, and it was within an ounce or so of the weight as measured on a triple-beam scale. ;D
