Cleaning Oil Pan
« on: September 14, 2022, 08:07:12 AM »
Took off my oil pan on my 1978 CB 750.  Was fairly dirty and I don't think ever was done before.  Bike has about 48000 KMS (30000 miles).
So my question is when I first start the bike will there be sufficient oil in the oil pan for the oil pump to get suction??  I filled oil tank to the full mark on the dipstick.  I'll watch oil light to make sure it doesn't stay on and shut bike off if it stays on more than a couple seconds.
Thanks for your comments.

The pressure side of the pump pulls oil from the tank, not the pan. The scavenge side of the pump pulls oil from the pan and returns it to the tank.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks Scottly.  Very good explanation.  I guess if oil tank is full no need to worry.  This is my first CB750.

The 750s are "dry sump" engines, while the other SOHCs are "wet sump", with all the oil in the pan.

When I drain the oil in oilpan, about one bottle is needed to refill, 1l or a quart.
My oil pump does not leak to pan.
CB750 K6.
I inspect and clean the strainer on oil pump now and then.
