My First CB550F Super Sport
« on: September 27, 2022, 01:52:50 PM »
I’ve been rebuilding bikes for a long time, but have finally gotten around to getting a CB550 project. I was actually looking for a CB400 Super Sport, but this came up on my search and it looked like a good starting point.

All of the take off parts were included. The carbs need to be cleaned and the bike looks to need a top end gasket/seal kit. The plan is to disassemble, paint the engine, vapor blast everything I can, and return it to original (but ridden) condition. I typically restore bikes to a “what if this bike was loved it’s entire life” condition.

Anyway, I suspect I will have questions at some point and I look forward to interacting with the knowledgeable regulars on the forum. One of the early things I have to sort out is the exhaust. Whoever modified it decided to cut the pipes before the collector. The pipes (especially #4) are not in great condition so I need to decide off these are restorable, or do I just go with an aftermarket set. I just love how the oem pipes collect in the front of the bike - it’s kind of the defining features of the SS.

That's a great bike, nice low mileage example, congrats on the purchase, welcome to the fold. Take your time,  do your research and it'll be a great bike. The exhausts on any of these bikes can be a challenge and cash intensive. Looking forward to seeing this bike come back to life.
Start with the end in mind...

Welcome to the 550F club!  They are great bikes.

I also wanted a 4000F until I saw one in person. They are smaller bikes and I already have an RD350 in that size so my search for one stopped. [they are very collectable]

Start a thread in "Project Shop" so we can follow along and answer questions.

welcome!
i'm with stev-o. my neighbour used to have a 400f that i rode sometimes and i'm happier with the 550. it's a lot more bike and still light and nimble enough. i'm sure you'll be happy with yours.
yes put up a project thread, then we can look over your shoulder and and give you all sorts of advice that you never knew you didn't need  ;D

Welcome from MN,

Make every effort to repair the collector on the exhaust.   Finding proper pipes can be a challenge.
