1975 cb550k1 shifter shaft seal replacement help
« on: October 21, 2022, 02:59:32 PM »
I was under the impression that I just had to remove the shifter and behind it I’d be able to remove the seal and press in a new one. Do I have to remove the side cover and can I remove it without losing lots of oil? Need some help thanks. the oil seal I purchased is Honda oem 91202-k.
Is this the correct seal?

the actual seal is in the main case, that cover has to come off,no oil behind it,itll be good to clean it out behind any way.
Remove the chain and sprocket, clean all the gunk away, screw a self tap screw into the old seal and pull it out.

while its off check if the bike has ever had an o ring chain, they are too wide and can dig much worse than this into the case causing a leak.

How far back is the seal on the shifter shaft? I don’t see it in that photo

The shifter shaft seal is at the bottom of the shaft pressed into the crankcase;clean all the old chain grease off of it to see it better.

A way I do it is to use Kerosene on a cotton rag.

I don’t have kerosene. I wonder if I can use a spray degreaser?

Order two seals. They're not expensive and there's a chance you might mess up one.
Remove the old seal and make sure there aren't any burrs around the case.
Tape up the splines on the end of the shift shaft. One thin wrap with painters or masking tape.
Cut a piece of PVC pipe just a little longer than the shift shaft.
Smear a TINY amount of Yamabond, Hondabond, etc., on the outside of the new seal. Do NOT use that orange RTV crap.
Slide new seal on, push it in by hand the best you can, then gently and evenly tap it seated with the PVC pipe.

Put gasoline on a rag to wash that stuff off.

So, I started this this morning, was able to remove old seal.
What I didn’t realize was that oil would start pouring out.
So in a panic I went inside to get new seal and instal the best I could by hand.
It was still dripping oil. I searched and finally found a pipe I could use to evenly press the seal in.
And then it stopped leaking.
Cleaned up and kept checking for leaks.
Nothing so far.
Fingers crossed.
Cleaned and install covers and shifter.
I attached a before and after cleaning and seal installed picture.
Thanks for everyone’s help.

Are you sure its the seal? Other leak points are
1 the blank plug in front of sprocket if an O ring chain has ever been fitted
2 Oil pressure switch
3 oil pump to casing O rings
4 oil pump cover O ring

I will open it up again and see if it’s leaking anywhere else.
Right now it’s whiskey time.
Thanks for the help!

Is the sump leaking? Are you sure it's coming from under the sprocket cover?

not only can the oil pressure switch leak at the terminal end its also a tapered thread that might just need tightening or even use some teflon tape on it.

Look closely at the new seal: it should have the size on it. The first number should NOT be "14", if it is, then it is not a genuine Honda seal. The shaft hole must be 13.8mm, not 14mm, and the counterfeit versions are selling the 14mm hole size seals because they are less than $1 to buy. If it is the 14mm seal it will leak oil when hot, because the shifter shaft is slightly less than 14mm diameter and the oil rests against it when parked on the sidestand.

My spare O-ring (PN: 91202-216-000), ordered at CMSNL has '13.7' on it. So far I didn't need it. The right engine oil can keep old rubber parts supple.
