Deja vu--I bought another CB750 after a lapse of 50 years
« on: December 30, 2022, 12:51:01 PM »
Back in the day I bought a new 1970 K0 (after my '70 Sporster was stolen). It was a spectacular, revolutionary bike! After putting 56k miles on it I built it into a trike, which was so terrifying I sold it immediately. I had bought a '71 K1 in the mean time that I rode for 35k miles. Later I went on to various Harleys, a BMW R100T and a Norton 750 Commando. Now I have '65 Triumph Bonneville I've rebuilt and a K1 I bought this fall; it hasn't run in decades. It turns over with the kick and electric starter. I'm working my way through the usual problems: rusty handlebars replaced and rewired, various bad electrical connections needing cleaning and dielectric grease, an ignition problem, rust in the gas tank, a little gunk in the carburetors, etc.
I also have 10 cars ranging from a 1936 Cord 810 Phaeton to a 2005 Jaguar XKR Convertible. My Daily driver is a Tesla Model 3.
I'm building a new shop in El Cajon which will be much easier to get to. When it's done I'll post an invitation to come see it.

The Cord was quite dramatic when it appeared. It was originally going to be a baby Duesenberg but it was decided to make it its own model between the Auburn and the Duesenberg sort of like the GM models spanning from the Chevy through the Cadillac.
It was front wheel drive so 'no tunnel' meant it could be lowered 4". It was also the first American unibody car, so not being on a frame lowered it another 6". And finally they decided men weren't wearing top hats when they drove so they lopped another 6" or so off the top. It was unlike anything on the road.
My father courted my mother in the Cord and they drove it from NYC to Mexico for their honeymoon. As an infant I was brought home with my mother from the hospital in the Cord. It fell on hard times and was sold in the early 1950s.
I bought this one 5 years ago and it is undergoing a complete restoration (except the seats which, incredibly, have almost all original leather). The engine is just finishing its rebuild in Santa Clara. Rewiring, new glass and restoration of the very complex shifting mechanism await their turn.

Welcome back aboard the 750. Love the green.
And that Cord is very interesting. I just watched a few videos of them. I'll send you a message of a member here that is in Lakeside who is selling off his 750 bits, tools and shop equipment to move out of country. He might have some things you need.
When I get back out to Oceanside I'll get in touch.
In the meantime I'm in NH working on my project 750s and my rider K5 shown in the picture in October.

rocket johnny:  The styling of the Cord 810 was the work of designer Gordon M. Buehrig.
