valve seal clearance Q?
« on: February 21, 2023, 06:04:12 PM »
Does an RC315 cam have enough lift to cause a valve seal clearance issue?
I have a freshly re-built head but know nothing about it other than it's ported, the stems are greased and it has aftermarket springs and retainers.  Does the clearance also depend on the guides and seals used?
This thing was a smoker when it was barn fresh with the RC315 on a set of stock springs and retainers.  It's getting a fresh hone and rings, hopefully will run a couple thousand more miles.

Per, your previous post about seal clearances piqued my curiosity, this motor is a prime candidate for having had a seal issue. The rings also were odd looking with very sharp edges and little dips in the thin oil rings.
I guess it's time to spend a couple hours measuring things.

If it consumed oil, piston domes and chambers are full of soot, ex ports too.

I only rode it about 6 miles after coming out of the barn but yes, it had oily carbon on the piston tops and combustion chambers. The PO included a fresh head built for it, but it's a typical PO situation, I only know what I can see and measure.
It's possible the previous oil use saved the cylinders during its years in the barn.
