Hello from Houston
« on: May 10, 2023, 10:07:26 AM »
I recently bought a 1978 CB750 F SS resto-mod.  I started on bikes with a Mini Trail 50 as a kid, but have not owned a motorcycle for a number of years.  So, not a young man age wise, but at heart.

The major cosmetics on the CB750 are nice, however, a number of fundamentals and details were not addressed.  The bike has not started or run since purchase although it does crank over.  The main cause appears to be due to electrical / wiring system issues.  The main fuse was / is distressed (but not blown).  The green wire in the main wiring harness under tank and to the rectifier overheated and the insulation has melted and melted the connector(s) and black wrap of the harness.  I have purchased all new wiring, harness, connectors etc. as plug and play and plan to install.  However, I need to get to root cause so that I do not repeat the issue.  I need to do some more research before making rambling requests for help from you experienced folks, but if any quick thoughts feel free to let me know.  I will likely post some pictures.  I do understand that the M Units seem to be the way to go now, but currently planning to use OEM configuration for now.

Otherwise, I am replacing all rubber hoses and related gaskets.  I have the battery box and oil tank out for access and powder coating.  The related question I have how to replace the braided oil lines to and from the engine from the oil tank.  Can fittings be re-used, etc.

Look forward to communicating and possibly meeting you.

Welcome aboard the forum Steve

Congrats on getting your 750. I also went @ 25 years without a bike raising a family before getting back into riding.

Yes the fittings can be reused to make new lines.

There's a Kenny Osberg on fb that polishes up the old fittings and attaches new SS lines to them. They look great.

Go to the project section and start a thread on your bike to keep it all in one thread. Pictures are always great to include.

I sometimes get down your way riding from NH to San Diego as my kids and grands are now in Florida and in Vegas. I'll be on my goldwing as my old back can't ride cross country on the 750 anymore.....

See if this link works to the spot on fb on Kenny's SS oil lines
(You might have to join the CB750.com fb group to see it)

Welcome from Lake Travis and congrats on getting a CB750.

Suggest starting a new thread in the "Project Shop" area so we can follow along and answer any questions you may have.

As far as your oil lines, check with local auto supply stores, some rebuild them using your old fittings.

This is usually caused by someone reversing the polarity of the battery connections. In addition to melting the insulation, it may have damaged the rectifier, so be sure to test it before powering up with the new harness.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
