G’day

I thought I’d give this Rickman project one more go & see if I can actually get to ride it before I’m too old.

Going to have a go at fitting the tank & tailpiece today.

Ok so probably not enough room for a fuel tap with the white tank.

Not sure, but maybe.

The original tank has the fuel taps a bit further forward.

I’ll look the set of standard carbs tomorrow & make a plan.

I have seen people use an elbow fitting and plumbed in a relocated Petcock…you would lose the reserve of a std petcock doing that but it gives you some flexibility.

That right side one is slightly further back too.

Not sure how easy it is to move them forward. Not me, someone who can.

Or look at using the original tank.

The CRs that FunJimmy fitted to his CafeInterceptor 550 he modified the intake manifold so the rubbers and manifold brought them forward. The CB750 has the manifold fastened directly to the head, not bolted on like the 550. So, any way to fit shorter rubber intakes to bring the rack of CRs forward to avoid the interference? Or, is the distance needed too great?
Is your white tank designed for the cb750 motor or another motor?
Sounds like your only choice is to relocate the petcock location if you are going to fit the white tank, unless you are intending to raise the tank on the bike front and back to give the needed clearance for a petcock that hugs the tank tightly, pingle design maybe?

I think I either have the white tank fuel tap location modified or look at using the original tank which has fuel tap in the right place, but may need a liner? Not sure with old fibreglass.

I noticed the same issue with the gorgeous alloy tanks made inEngland, by TAB. They are all made for Triumph and Royal Enfield engines and the petcock outlets are in the wrong place.

My original tank fits just like your orange one. I think I will line it and use it.

The fiberglass tanks if laid up with polyester and most early epoxies will not withstand modern fuels, be they either without ethanol. So, Caswell’s or POR liner if the POR liner is compatible with fiberglass tanks.

Someone with good fiberglass skills and composites can modify your tanks to move the petcock locations forward so they don’t foul your carbs. You just have to figure out where forward you can fit the petcock so it will work.
The fiberglass work is not that hard to do, if you can supply the new petcock threaded flanges to lay into the tank it will make it easier to find a skilled person who can do the work.
Got a buddy here in Tucson who is retired Grumman Aircraft composites production worker, he has the skills needed for the composites work.

Lining a fibreglass tank needs some extra thought. The area around the petcock flanges needs to be completely sealed, otherwise the fuel can “leach” into untreated areas. It’s almost best to let the liner fill the bung, then retap the threads only.

I’ll need to do better on this one, because the last ‘glass tank I did ended up failing in this area.

Alternatively, I just may use the original tank for “Show” and the alloy, Ex-race tank for “Go”…..

There might be a guy in Pine, Colorado who is slower than you two guys. I think it was 10 years ago that he got the tank and pipes, and 2 years ago he brought me the head and cylinders to top-end for him, but I think those are still wrapped in the plastic? It does have nice paint, though!

Now that’s funny! I make no excuses. I have decided that when the weather is great (6-7 months around here) I am NOT spending time in the shop. Unless something is broken, then save it for a “rain day”.

So it’s been a while & the only progress on the Rickman was putting a piston & seal in the brake caliper on this cool bike which I should show more love.
