72/73 350F Exhaust
« on: June 24, 2023, 12:10:28 PM »
I am having a problem reinstalling the exhaust on what is titled as a '73 350F.  It should be noted, however, that the nomenclature plate on the neck says it was built in June, 1972.  I point this out because I have not seen these mufflers on any photos of early 350Fs.  After market?

When I disassembled the exhaust I thought I marked "L" and "R" on the muffler.  I may have mislabeled them because as I try to reinstall them nothing is making sense.  They won't fit around the kick stand on the left, and both muffler are hard against the rear axle nuts when bolted up with the rear passenger foot pegs.  I tried reversing them but still no joy.  See attached photo of mufflers

They appear to be Jardines. While it's been MANY years since I worked with those on a 350F, I seem to remember that, in your picture as reference, they are opposite the way you have them laid out there. The Jardines for these Fours had one side split wider to mount the kickstand thru, which may be a clue here?

I see those are aftermarket mufflers.
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !

Yes, reversing them does make sense so the left one fits around the kickstand, but I still have the problem of the rear mounting bracket.  When the passenger pegs are tightened down the mufflers are forced against the rear axle.  If I place the rear bracket on the outside of the frame the tab on the passenger foot peg forces me to position the peg so it folds forward, which can't be right.

Since the passenger foot pegs are likely OEM, while the mufflers are aftermarket, you may have to grind a little metal from those tabs, so they are oriented in the correct position, or go with a different set of pegs that fit better with no modification.

Thanks to all.  I am back on track to complete the exhaust install.  Last step before trying first start.
