Cam chain sprocket won't go on cam

Hi all, first time, long time.

I am trying to finish a reseal job and am trying to put the cam sprocket back on the camshaft. I know this is supposed to be a puzzle but every way I try it it seems like I need 1-2mm more slack from the chain somehow. I even took the head off to make sure the tensioner was installed right and had the tension all the way off. I've also tried forcing it...but have stopped myself since I figure nothing good can come of that.

Any and all tips appreciated. Thanks!

Are you sure the chain runner at the front is installed correctly? It goes INSIDE the run of the chain.

Not the first, wont be the last but always helps to read the book DO SO BEFORE FITTING CAM COVER or you will be in for expensive repairs
