yard sale finds
« on: August 19, 2023, 03:39:57 PM »
I heard there was a yard sale with Honda stuff. I am trying to not buy stuff but my brother was there and said I should go.
I got a rolling frame with no papers, I think it's a replacement frame around K3 with hand stamped numbers and no tag or rivet holes. I offered to pay more for a title but no luck. I thought it was a 750 auto but it just has the aluminum wheels with pretty spokes, center feed late caliper, with a spare, a broken rhino horn top tree with nice K1 gauges. The A, early F or late K forks have nice chrome all the way up.
I snagged a tote full of stuff, it had a sandcast brake rotor, a silver Tokiko 2 caliper and early bracket assembled for the right side but not cut, a black early caliper and bracket, a set of 4-1 carb cables, tops, springs and slides. Not 28 tops nor a carb body to be found on the property dangit.
There were some Kawasaki parts. A son had set aside a real Z1 900 engine. I got some handlebar controls, a caliper, master cylinder tee and and hose.

Me too it's a crazy thing, I saw a set of carb slides and 4-1 cables for sale and thought how stupid and yet here I am with a set myself.
I was looking at the bike some more, it has a single fuse and a round ignition plug. I think it was a K1 with a replacement frame and never got running. The gauges are new K1 showing 1.1 mile with perfect faces. There's a tiny bit of garage rash on the metal housings. There is a new type seat latch bracket with no latch in it.
I'm going back out and put them in a safe place. I was going to wash it before rolling it off the truck. Those gauges aren't going to get wet.

Those guages can also be converted to K0….. Nice find!

It was a find, I should have gone sooner. The last cool find was a set of sandcast shocks, 7 coils showing black tops and 3 spring adjustments. The headlight bucket and trim look new too. Bosch lens, this guy was assembling a nice bike.

Wow, good score!  Finding stuff like that always makes you wonder..."How the hell did this stuff end up here?"

One of the sons has a Z1 kawasaki street/race bike. Yet they mixed a lot of kawasaki parts in with honda stuff. I saw a sweet looking CB 4-1 header but when I turned it over the bottom had some serious holes ripped in the collector and muffler.
I saw the empty package from a set of cb750 carb adapters for 29 smoothbores in a tote, that had me on the prowl, but the Kawasaki guy said he had already scooped up the 29's. there was one adapter there, but it was smushed by a screw clamp.
I also got a Zenith carb like the one on my ATP turbo charger. It looks new but has the adjustable main jet knob broken off in the body. Good for parts and the intake spacer.
Ooops, this just in, there was also a sandcast type acorn nut mirror with the HM logo and patent emblem. Now the sandcast has a set of two original ones.

I think the rims and forks are 750 Hondamatic, there were a few tell-tale A parts strewn around the sale area and they sold an A engine earlier. The fender may be gl1000, it's several inches longer and could possibly work on a later frame and maybe with a long swingarm. I like the style of it although it's probably heavier.
This is a replacement frame with a K2 number hand stamped into it.

What to do with a no title and possibly never used replacement frame? It would be a sad day to cut it up.

What's weirder yet, the other replacement framed bike I have is 232 vin numbers away from this one, the original bikes could have been made the same day.

Have you had the bike inspected by the police to run the numbers through the system? Hopefully it is clean and maybe you can get the history of ownership towards getting a title.

Nice haul!
I never find yard sales like that.  :(
(Which is probably a good thing, I don't need more bike stuff.)

The seller thought she had to turn it in as scrapped since it has been advertised in an estate and it went through probate. I'm not sure that is true with the DMV, I think the attorney is just accounting for the money.

Did you get the letter from the estate to legally sell it? If so you should be able to get a title from the state through the lost title process. My K5 came from my friend's estate and his cousin was the executor with a letter to sell it with no title available and I took that with me and they issued a title to me.

No but thanks for that info, now I have another tool in my toolbox. I drove by this morning but no one from the family was there. I need to get the phone number.

I also bought a $10 Holley carb with a broken/melted choke horn, it has been soldered. The numbers say 1968 or 1969, 375 hp. 396 Chevrolet. Undamaged, it would have been worth a couple hundred. Maybe $1500 restored.

I like that find Don;you sure the lower throttle butterfly plate is still flat/not warped?

Nope, he has a big bore real Z1 that he drag races and realized a spare engine would be a good idea. He also snagged the 29 smoothbore Mikunis.

Edit: that rear fender is from a CB750A so it will bolt on a late model long frame.

The 3310 carb is a 780 cfm vacuum secondary. I think I'll get a new proform carb body and build it. My 400 Pontiac has a 780 double pumper on it, the vac secondary might be more fuel efficient. When the baseplate throttle blades are totally closed, they appear to seal all the way around.

I thought the swingarm looked wide, it's a Hondamatic swinger, long and wide. With the axle all of the way back it is 19" center of axle to center of swingarm. 10" between the adjusters. It's almost as long as my K1 welded swingarm, of course adjustment of the chain will eat up some of that.
The forks look like cb750A and have the tall lowers but the right one has a (edit) 393 code. The brake is 750 type for the big rotor so this thing is a grab bag of stuff.
It was looking too much like a bike and I value the floor space, so I took it apart, the parts will go in the totes and I put the frame up on the shelf.
