Is this a pepper shaker?!
« on: September 03, 2023, 07:12:28 PM »
Trying to work out what the hell this part is behind my headlight?! (image for reference)
Looks like a pepper shaker or small speaker  :o

I seem to recall someone mentioning a speed alert sounder? Any know? Just curious. I can't find it on CMSNL parts list.

It's a Turn signal beeper. It makes a beeping sound with the turn signal is on. It reminds you to turn it off after the turn.

I think it's the indicator beeper - I didn't bother getting one when I built my 550.

OK, I think that explains what the 3 unconnected wires are in my headlight....! Must be an annoying sound so the PO disconnected it  :D

In UK we were required to disconnect it at pdi as it sounded too much like our audible pedestrian crossings and was considered a hazard for blind people

There are 2 wires for it.
Many were disconnected in the 70s as they were a very annoying sound. Think Screeching......

Most of owners who had a buzzer, disconnected it. I have used it a couple of years for an acoustic alarm together with the oil press idiot light. Best option would be to have it alarm you, when the sidestand is still down.

That’s a good idea Delta! I wouldn’t know how to rig that up though….have left the stand down once or twice. It’s bloody dangerous.

I many, many times. I once had a switch fastened, a little cylinder filled with mercury, which in vertical position had continuity. It didn't live long, a month or so later the mercury had leaked into nature. :-[  Must have been a Chinese product.

You could look for an aftermarket side stand sensor. They usually have a magnet inside, depending on the location of the magnet you get continuity or not.

Our KLR650’s have the side stand safety switch. It shuts the bike down if you put it in gear before lifting the stand. Excellent safety feature!
