Easy to move with kick starter when plugs are out.

One question.  Do you set it 15 past and adjust the tensioner or do you set it at 15 degrees and keep the tension on it while adjusting the tensioner?

When crank is at 15*ATDC (as spring tower is located on photo), release tensioner bolt a few turns and tighten it again.
The spring should push the tensioner rod against tensioner metal housing.

Possible to push from rear end and make sure it can move.
Do not push while tighten the tensioner bolt so it will be too tight if that is possible.

So no tension on the crankshaft.

What ever way you go through the process, do not try to turn over with the plugs in place as you will bend the tiny advancer shaft.

What makes you say that?

There appears to be an off center peg that connects the advancer to the crankshaft.

That shaft gets off center from someone who has not pulled out the spark plugs so there isn't compression in the motor. Turning the shaft with the 23mm nut with compression puts a bend in the shaft which throws off the advancer cam timing and how your motor runs.
If it's off center then you need to straighten it so the advancer operates correctly. Use a dial indicator with the advancer off the shaft. Runout of less than .006 is acceptable.

Lots of manuals have the 4 valve, then the other 4 procedure, but the one cylinder at a time method is easier, at least for me. ;)
Also for me.

And if you have a lot of compression you’ll shear the dowel pin or the dowel pin hole in the advance will break out…

Grasshopper turn it with the alternator or the kick starter…

I understand that you are saying it takes significantly more torque to turn the crankshaft if the plugs are installed. And this could damage something.

Any time you are applying a fair amount of torque, not supporting the other end of the wrench can cause problems.

I don't take a big ass breaker bar or large torque wrench and just lean on it.

The first time I reinstalled the axle nut on a rear wheel, I almost pivoted the bike over its center stand before I adjusted my technique.

It not how you’re applying the torque… It’s what you’re applying the torque to.

The advancer’s dowl pin is for timing. The dowl pin, the crank hole, and the advancer hole can be damaged when using it to turn the engine over, regardless of technique.

Everyone is trying to help and they know as they read your post what you know.. This site has downloadable service manuals.
