A strange place for oil
« on: September 19, 2023, 03:41:21 PM »
I was working on altenator wiring and had my bike proped on the right side on some tires.  When I finished and straighten it up, a few tablespoons of oil came out of the points cap area.  Is that area connected to oil.  Also, strangely, the is a small hole in the case about a 1/4" in from the edge that connects to the cover.  I'm checking the cover to see if leaning on the tires might have deformed it but it looks ok.  Ordered a new gasket which I will Permatex in hoping that will seal it.  Should I put a small screw in the hole to seal it.

It should be dry under the points cover. There is a seal on the crankshaft, and the stud that the advancer mounts on has a o-ring where it screws into the crankshaft.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

The shaft that screws into the crank end (and operates the points cam) has an “0” ring at its base. It seals off oil in the crank at full pressure. It probably drooled because you laid it over. Don’t glue the gasket or seal the hole. If it stays dry, forget about it. If not, change the “0” ring.
