1975 CB750 Clutch Noise
« on: September 23, 2023, 04:23:45 PM »
HAVING NEVER OWNED ONE OF THESE BEAUTIES I DID NOT REALIZE THE CLUTH NOISE IS NORMAL. APPEARENTLY THERE IS A FIX. YOU PUT A GOLDWING CLUTCH PLATE IN TO TAKE UP SOME ROOM. DOES ANYONE KNOW THE PROCEEDURE, PART NUMBER AND DESCRIPTION OF WHAT I NEED TO REMIDY THIS?

Before you tear into it, the noise is a combination of cam chain, primary drive chain and clutch chatter. All magnified by a dry sump (very little oil in the sump to deaden the noise). Give it a good tuneup and synchronize the carbs. Don’t set the idle too low and 75% of the noise will disappear.

Same as the double steel plate used in the K7/K8/F2/F3 models. Careful attention to detail is required when performing this mod. I think there may have been a TSB from Honda for this. As Benelli indicated, a good carb sync will often quell most of the noise and bless you with a super smooth idle too.

Basically remove 1 fiber plate and install the double metal plate in the middle. I can text you the Honda bulletin but you gotta reach out before Tuesday night as I'm outta here.

It is not a friction disc business.

You can also swap out a 77/78 clutch unit but you need more 77/78 parts such as the clutch cover (not the chrome piece), deeper clutch basket and clutch guts

All this info is buried somewhere on the site but good luck finding it

75 and up used a clutch basket with the outer plate having wider tabs, if a standard inner plate is used it may rattle.

I just saw that clutch service bulletin here somewhere and printed it for my collection of interesting things to know.
Edit; Scroll down to "750 clutch question" on this page for the bulletin and more clutch info you might not need.

This is the Honda service bulletin to fix clutch noise.
The list of part numbers needed(all 5 parts have to be changed out)is at the bottom of the bulletin.

I did some measurements when doing my K2 clutch today.

Old stock clutch package height was 36.7mm. Used fibers and metals.

I removed 1 fiber only. Added the double metal disc. Clutch package height 36.0mm New fibers.
All metals glass beaded just for sure.

7 fiber, 6 metal disc where 1 is double. This package need the later clutch basket and inner.

I did the one fiber off, double disc added. Clutch pack 36.0 mm. 0.7mm thinner than my old.

It still rattle. I need to ride around for a while.

It might be better if the package could be 37mm something
