Topic: Paintless Dent Repair in Ontario, Canada.

The tank on my Sandcast cb750 has a couple of shallow dents, but the paint is not cracked. I’m looking for a magician to push them out so I can just rub down the original finish and then clearcoat. Anyone in Ontario, Canada know such a person? Thanks! John D.

Great….. let me know what you find. The guy that has my tank now is useless. After 8 months he just told me he needs a “special jig” to hold the tank while he is working it. It’s over $1200! I told him I would pick up my tank and make one……. Not going back there.

I'm sorry I don't have the answer, but "just in case" you hadn't considered it yet... my suggestion is to broaden your search to include:

1.) auto-body shops. My old boss was the type of body-master you're all looking for -- the type of old-school guy who can remove dents with some cloth and a flat head body-hammer, by tapping the peaks of the dent to push it out, or pushing it out from the inside. He started in auto-body shops before opening his motorbike shop, so that's where I would look.

2.) auto-paint supply shops work with or know of professionals who deal with paint and body.

3.) some high-end motorcycle shops use sub-contrators for things they don't need all the time: Pin-stripers who still do them by hand, body-pros, etc. Our shop worked with a local Harley shop to do some projects. This is my last suggestion, because some shops are really tight-lipped about who they work with. Auto-paint shops have no reason to hide their good info.

I guess finally, you could also look up pushing out dents using an inner-tube and compressed air. (Several people here dislike this idea)

DO NOT use compressed air to try pushing out gas tank dents!!!

Offer to take him the frame or a donor frame. That way he can afix the tank to an accurate jig. When i did a bunch of CB tanks a few years ago, I cut up a trashed frame and did exactly this. Worked perfectly every time. Until then, you can also make T out of some angle bar and dril a couple of hole for tank rear mounts. Its not rocket science.

Gentlemen…… Thanks for all the good ideas! I actually started making a really strong jig with parts screwed to a solid chunk of 2 X 12” lumber. I machined up two alloy “plugs” that fit snuggly where the rubbers usually fit on the frame and a clamping arrangement for the tab usually held down by the rubber strap. Last piece (not made yet as I have to pick up my tank) is a bracket that will bolt in place of the petcock and then screw to the centre lumber. This should nicely lock down the tank. The main 2 X 12” piece should then be used to clamp it all in a big bench vice. Pictures to follow.

PDR as a process dates back to the early 20th century. I really doubt this guy “invented Paintless Tank Repair” because that too has been going on for decades on motorcycles and autos.

You have little control over where the pressure will press - sometimes the distance between the front mounting points can increase. Apparently it is possible to fix this by carefully squeezing the sides back together with ratchet straps, but I haven't tried that, and don't know how well it would work,
