When I did my K0 I wanted an air box with a 3 hole mount and not the 2 hole.

Yamiya body kits only have the 2 hole so I had to paint a 3 hole to match.

Used vmr rattle cans and it was bang on. One too many squirts of candy and it’s too dark so it’s all about patients. I checked it 3-4 times in the sun for the correct shading.
Were you able to get away with one can for the base and mid coats? Or did you have to buy more than one? How many coats of each? Trying to figure out how much I’ll need before putting an order in

All I had to paint was the air box.

1 can to do the base and mid coat?? They are different.

One can of base coat and one can of candy was more than enough.

If I was painting a tank and covers too, you could get it with 2 cans of each if you’re good but I’d opt for a pint and shoot it out of a gun if I had all that to spray.

How many coast? No clue, just did it until it matched. Maybe 4-5 light coats??

Candy is difficult to match unless shot all at once as each coat builds the color. The clear changes it a bit too.
The primer can influence the color even with the sparkly base coat of a candy flake paint job.
Always a good idea to practice shooting a candy if you never have done one to better understand it.
So, if you are shooting tank, side covers, fork covers and headlight bucket you have more surface area than you realize is there.

ALL paint work requires quality prep work for a quality outcome. The “spraying” part requires less skill for more simple schemes. And then, finish work can turn an average paint job into a high quality paint job.

So, if you are determined enough and willing to be patient, do the prep right. Then spray it. Then wet sand and buff it out and you should be plenty proud of the outcome.

Worst case, you spend $150 and a few days to find out if you can do it. If not, you end up taking it to a pro. $150 and some time is a cheap skill building lesson in my book.

I appreciate this.
I want to make sure I do the prep correctly.

What process do you guys use to put tank stripes on (OEM like stripes that are vinyl)?

After laying base coat, after it cures?
Do you perform any sanding/polishing before the stripes?

Assume after the stripes are layed out, it is then clear coated.

The way I've always painted stripes was to lay out the base coat color and cover it with a couple coats of clear to protect the base coat, especially if it's a metallic color.  Let it sit for a day or 2 then sand it smooth with 800 wet/dry sandpaper.  Lay out your stripe design, spray them, and then pull the masking tape and lay another 3-4 coats of clear all in the same session so you'll have plenty on there.  Let it cure for a couple days then sand and polish.

Nvr2old does fabulous paint jobs, so he knows of what he speaks, generally the vinyl stripe kits are buried after applying in several layers of clear. Let the underlying paint cure well before applying your stripe kit and careful measuring and application of a few lines of low tack masking tape can help you align things...
