Another Carb Question
« on: November 03, 2023, 07:30:53 AM »
1976 CB400: What is the best process for disassembly/re-assembly of the slide into the carb and re-attachment to the linkage? Also, what is the order of assembly for the components that fit into the slide mechanism? Thank you.

Youtube has a lot of instruction vids. You can use CB350F vids as well as CB500/550.
The best are by Motormac. Language is German but images speak for themselves. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Honda+CB+350+400+Four+Vergaser+Montage+Carburetor+Assembly+Part+1
But... are you sure you want to go there? There is nothing that needs cleaning ever. Honda designed it thus that you can leave it alone for as long as the bike lives. All maintenance can be done from the bowl side.

There's a ball end on the slide lift arm. It slips in between two black (plastic? carbon?) pieces with concave ends to capture the ball. The top one is held down by the cap, the lower one is on a small coil spring so the pieces will move apart fairly easily. Just pull the ball out sideways you don't need to remove the cap. Getting the ball back in between the pieces is a bit tricky but isn't impossible.

Yes there are reasons for removing the slide other than cleaning, which is rarely if ever needed. Many mods - overbore, cam, pods, headers, etc - will need carb tuning. Tuning the carbs to compensate often requires moving or even reshaping the needles.

Thank you both, The needle jet in one carb would not drop out so I needed to give it a few taps from the slide end. The passages in the 2 I removed thus far were blocked with crud and needed wire to unblock them. I suppose if I could get the jet out from the bottom I wouldn't need to remove the top part.

Yes, he is very gründlich. I've seen carb parts in his vids, that I didn't know the existence of.
He shouldn't have fit Keyster parts as replacement imo, but he's thorough enough to show the difference in dimensions between OEM and Keyster FLOAT VALVE SETS.
