OK got started last night with cleaning out the tank on the latest K6 tank. It was pretty grody.

Well 5 days in electrolysis, drained after 2 days to clean out sediment and rust particles, rinsed and inspect.  Decided to make another batch to clean some more out. There was a patch of rust around the petcock mount. Cleaned off the electrode several times more, once a day. Drained it again today, rinsed and inspected. Much better. Time to put in the Evaporust, filled to the brim, for a couple days.
Again a before picture to compare.

oof, that's some time spent cleaning it out! Curious to see the "after".
Are you planning on refinishing the outside, or is the paint and decal still holding strong?
Current Project: CB750-K6 (hoping for OEM look)
Future Project: CB750-K8  (likely go wild on this build)

Go back and look at the pictures from the start of this thread. No there isn't original paint and stripes on this tank. It might be a repop tank from the early 2004 timeline. It just has rattle can flat red on it and petcock on the right so it'll get painted for a K4 eventually. (It has the right side petcock for the earlier bikes K0-K4).
After the clean out I'll drop it off with another tank I have for a friend, going to get the dents removed via PDR. Then time will come later at some point for painting.

I emptied the Evaporust out after 2 days. Looked great until I ran my bore scope in to inspect the top surface. I found some rust forward of the gas cap. Must have been an air pocket. So I filled it again but this time I moved the 2x4 blocks under it so the front was facing downward to be covered.
Drained again after 2 more days and ran the bore scope again to find all is rust free. Sure glad I spent the $79 for the dual camera bore scope.
Then I rinsed it 4 times with clean diesel fuel followed up with coating all surfaces with 2 stroke oil.
Next will be sending this tank and another to get the dents out.
But have a trip out west to clear out my storage and then stop and see the sons and the grands in Vegas on the way back.

OK, finally finished the K4 I had on the lift and delivered it on Monday before the storm came in putting us back to winter here in NH.
So I rolled the December $100 K6 acquisition up on the lift for it's cleanup and referb. At 11,000 miles it has had a rough life so it's going to take some time for this one. According to the guy I bought it from(2nd owner) said that original owner went down on it after hitting a car at low speed. The oil tank shows signs of a hit, dented, like he might have contacted the left rear bumper(?) of the car and the stator cover is ground and dented from the resulting stop on the left side. It doesn't appear to have any frame or fork damage. But the frame and swingarm show signs of winter driving in the salt from the corrosion present. So I was thinking yesterday about what the direction will be that I will go on this referb. The rust is concerning on this frame so my brain was thinking that maybe I should use the NOS frame I got last summer for this bike instead of on my brother's K6 that has mice pee rust divets and a motor that was frozen from mice pee in the cylinders. Maybe I'll use this motor in my brother's bike referb instead...still thinking about it.
I dropped a couple of the carb bowls, there's dried gas but thankfully no corrosion from MTBE gas of the early 2000s.
Check out the funky plumbing of the gas line conversion of the original K6 single fuel tap line on the carbs to a dual line tap of the aftermarket tank the last owner put on.....it's a wonder how well it ran with the lines going down under the carbs? Eeeeks! What people do to these bikes!
I did some cleaning with diesel fuel and brushes to get the oil buildup on the motor and swingarm to finish up the day.
(It wasn't a full day in the shop as I had to go out and clean up during the storm several times)

Good Luck Stu, that looks like a project.

That fuel plumbing looks like a nightmare, I wonder if it even ran like that.

Yes it will be a project.
The plumbing probably made it lose power at speed and was probably why the guy parked it after a couple years like it is.

Well so much for plans.....
The carbs got a couple of 20 minute cycles in my new 30L ultrasonic cleaner and looking good until I turned it over to dry some more. Someone else has been in them....
They busted one of the #4 float posts and did a not so good of a repair job. The float sets cockeye'd. Hmmmmm

I got back to doing some more cleaning, worked on the rear wheel. There was some rust on the rim, decided to try using a brass brush. It turned out well getting most of the pitting out without scratching the chrome rim. Eventually I will replace with new spokes and maybe the rim too.
The chain and rear sprocket are toast. Used the angle grinder and cut the original chain off(11,000 miles)
I cleaned up the shocks the same way.(I didn't get pictures of them)
But I've got a busted shock mount to repair, from the aftermarket shock mount extenders for the saddlebags that weren't properly tapped from the beginning and had seized to the mount threads..... I remember they were a problem back in the 70s. The other side came off working the extender back and forth using lots of PB Blaster between strokes, but this one bit the dust right away......oh the joys of rusted, improperly made parts.
Anyone have a source for a replacement stud, size?

My package arrived from VintageCB750 yesterday with the new plain points cover, clutch cover, starter cover and a pack of oil filter washers(so I can put fresh oil in to fire it up as next step). I'm liking the way these covers look so far.

How do you go about repairing that shock mount?

Cut the remaining threads flush with the mount, carefully drill and tap for a stud to be screwed in place.

Stu….. I broke that stud in exactly the same manner on my cb550K. It had the identical extenders. This was years ago, I drilled right through and used a through bolt! Your solution sounds much cleaner.
