Don's 81 GS1100e happy Suzuki.
« on: December 20, 2023, 07:11:49 PM »
A friend sent me a pic of an 81 1100 Suzuki, been sitting in a family room for 10 years. 1981 gs1100E. I'm unsure of the miles, older rider had to park it due to health issues.
The carbs look like they have been swapped, not CV type, they look like my 29 smoothbores from the side. I'd think they would be bigger though.
I've been watching for an 83 priced too good to not buy, this would be the time of year for that.

If the mileage isn't excessive, and doesn't look as if its been really neglected or abused, with smooth bores. Merry Christmas...

I used 29mm carbs in my Katana when my son raced it in junior drag bike.
I imagine they would be good fun for street use.

I attempted to get the pic off of my phone onto the computer. It didn't work yet, it's a friend of a racing friend that lives in the Chicago suburbs. Probably a 3 hour drive each way. He told my friend it's a scary fast bike. It appears stock except for a 4-1 and the carbs with pod filters.
I mentioned I usually spend about a thousand getting a bike going again after a long hibernation. I'll find out when to call him tomorrow.

Had a friend that had one..Ran really good..Local Suzuki shop was a one man and son show.. Every one he sold ran its’ absolute best..

Great bikes but I like the later ones better, especially the 1100katana. When Suzuki went from the snowmobile 2cycle type crankshaft with ball bearings to the plain bearings all the other were using…

I have owned an '82 for several years now...creeping up on 40,000 miles.  Yeah, it was a little intimidating at first, pretty fast and quite heavy.  But once you get over that it's a great all around bike...one of my favorite to beat on in some fast sweepers.
If it works good, it looks good...

Here it is. I haven't called yet today, I'm not sure if he works. He was going to look for the title and give some thought to his asking price. The owner is a former drag racer, friend of a friend. Not a great pic for the carb spotters but those look like non CV mikunis.

Years ago when I had a group to ride with on weekends in Texas, there were a couple of them in our group. As Sean states above, a little heavy, also a little long, but boy were they comfy and fast. We used to joke that it had a television for a headlight. And no shim type valve adjustment, there's a lot to like. If the price is right, 'pull the trigger'....

I'm pretty sure I bought it, he liked the offer and will hold it as long as needed. $2K?

Mikuni for sure, 29 smoothbores most likely. The slides are stuck, I hope he didn't try them too hard.

I thought that they were 29's too. I have a few parts laid back for my 836 with them on it.
I'm planning on tires, battery, clean and lube the carbs, oil, filter, and hopefully the gas tank is nice inside. If not I have 4 gallons of evaporust.

You plan to run it on the strip ?

If I don't chicken out lol.
The owner raced the one he had before this one but lost it in a divorce settlement. That's why he bought this one, just to prove a point. The wheelie bars off of the first one may still be in his brother's garage. By the time he got this one, he already had a Top Dragster car so didn't race it. Rode it two years and parked it for 10.
He was a smoker/welder/auto painter/diesel mechanic, so the air is getting difficult to come by. I remember him fixing the motorhomes and tow vehicles of racers that I knew at the drag strip.
The header is a Kerker. Part of the upside is I get to see the inside of the 29 smoothbores, I've been hesitant to open up the ones on my 836 just because they seem to work ok.

Looks like a nice bike Don.  In my experience, Mikuni carbs are easy to work on, but just as in the Keihins, be sure to use genuine parts.  Here is some carb info to help you I.D. them....

Looks familiar Don. 8)

I don't think GS 1100E's are heavy, I think dry weight is 536lbs, the 82' CB 900F feels heavier and more top heavy. To me they feel more like a 750cc bike until you twist the throttle, then you are gone! They handle great and are comfortable. On the 80' GS 1100E we installed a Delkevik exhaust and a set of Mikuni RS36 carbs. It really woke up the bike. We have to replace the exhaust on the 81' so it will get a Delkevik exhaust and even though the carbs are fine we might sell them to fund another set of Mikuni RS36 carbs.
