 I had both in hand but went with the orange. I did have to use the milwaukee impact on it, I couldn't hold the flywheel to get the torque wrench non it. I tried third gear with my wife standing on the brake.

You said you lapped the tapers in well?
I remember what Leino was saying about the tapered shaft(flywheel too)and that's the area that holds it best,imo.
I hope you've got some good torque cranked-down on that large nut w/ the impact  :)
I had two 1100E's at the same time;A champagne colored EZ model and a later 83' Red & black.
I was happy to get the 83',but would rather have had the dark blue one  8)
I purchased the early flywheel tool for my 82' EZ,then later I bought the tool for the later 83' 1100ED model.
I am kicking myself for selling many different bikes which I had sold in the 90's.
I put a lot of $ into(all those bikes)the 83',but ended up only getting about 20% of the total back when I sold it.
I guy came to the Island from NH. and showed me cash in my face,in the late Fall..  >:(  ::) :)

   I sanded it and then lapped it until I started worrying about removing too much metal. I probably could have put some blue dykem on it and done another lap to see if there were any high spots but I'm probably overthinking it.
  I did scroll through ebay to see if there were any nice rotors for sale, didn't see any. The windings look good, nothing burned looking or bare. I remember in the 60's there was a lot of bad epoxy on coils. Vertex mags had a batch of slowly disintegrating coils. I caught Joe Hunt on the phone on a bad day and got a lecture from him. Rather than send it to him I sold it and went electronic.

Good,your rotor won't be spinning on the crank-end and losing traction;it will give you more alternator power,locked-down and spinning the rotor the way it should.  ;)

I notice when the flywheel/rotor is locked down better and not slipping,they shift harder  8)
How's your running voltage look measured at the battery Don ?

 The Mikunis to get are the RS36-D3-K? I got a paycheck burning a hole in my pocket, MX south on ebay has the set for $738.11 Orient Express has them for $750. Either will need filters and push-pull throttle, APE has good prices on them if they are in stock.

 It's likely not a big deal they are listed for my bike specifically, I just noticed an extra 0 in one part number. It appears they come with a couple sizes of jet and some hoses, fuel and bowl vent I assume.

Here's the box, it's the top one. Ours came with 2 sets of jets, bigger and smaller than the installed jets. Plus some hoses.

  I pulled the trigger on the carbs from MX south on ebay. Orient express was a no go.
  I got the push-pull throttle ordered from APE, but they are totally out of air filters. K&N are on sale at Summit and K&N for exactly $100 more than the unobtanium APE's. Farq.
  K&N's are on the way.
  I'm going to drain the gas tank and pull the petcock to get to the bottom of the 2.5 gallon reserve setting.

 I got the rear cowl seat lock grommet and a tool set hold down rubber. One thing I've learned with old bikes if you see it buy it because the next time you look they may be out of stock.

 Carbs and filters are out for delivery but I have a fuel leak to contend with on my 40 chevy. It's gassing up my garage.

 New Carburetor day! It's like new guitar day in the guitar world, except the obvious difference. Film at 11.
  I got them on, it for sure has the flat slide rattle. Started on the first turn and idle speed is good out of the box. It will be interesting to see how the air/fuel meter reads now.

 I tested the petcock, it drained down to reserve and then nearly emptied the rest of the fuel. No idea why it seemed to go on reserve at a half tank two times before. I'm wondering if there was a vacuum leak on the vac line.
 I couldn't stand it and took a short ride around the neighborhood with the pull throttle; I had a finger on the kill button in case of a throttle stick. It accelerates with less twist of the grip as expected, the slide rattle sounds like another engine. The A/F ratio is rich, but more even than the 29's. I saw 13.X-1 a lot and some in the high 12's. Great for performance.

  The PO had a bunch of pipe insulation on the frame trying to keep the petcock off of the #1 carb top, it's nice to be able to clean up all of that stuff. It even had one Kawasaki frame to tank rubber insulator on it.
  I was looking at super bright LED's inline resistors and LED bulb for the taillight. It would be worth the $20 or so to have the light brighter and the warning panel not lit up. The downside is that the warning panel wouldn't work.

 L0L!
 The p/p throttle came today I spent the day with grandkids and my brother so I didn't get to work on it. It's pretty thin so I won't need to do a lot of right control moving to use it. The parts are all motion pro, the throttle appears to be pretty small where the cables wrap around, I'm hoping the travel is comfortable.

We didn't have any issues with installing the p/p. It's about 3/4" wide and you don't notice the brake lever moved over.

 Cool, I also repossessed a new pair of those sweet Randakk's grips from my brother's Goldwing. They were part of a trade that never got completed so I took them back for the GS1100.
 I got the throttle changed, the return was a little draggy until I put the tank back on. Go figure? The Randakks grips are nice if a little shorter than the throttle tube.
 I have a new in the package throttle lock, I may blow the grip back off and install it after a test ride.

 The bike now has two personalities, one before the power band and then the "hang on dummy you're going somewhere fast" one. The lower rpms are pretty rich, high 9 to 10-1, I haven't touched anything on the carbs yet as far as tuning. It got as lean as 13-1 at higher rpm's and I can tell when the accelerator pumps are working. 
 I tested the clutch and it didn't slip today, that's good.

Today I had the 80' GS 1100E out for some errands. They definitely get woke up with the RS carbs.  8)

 I just read the Mikuni tuning manual, it reads pilot screws 1/8 to 1/2 turn out to tune 1/8 to 1/2 throttle, they were a full turn out of the box. Adjusting to 1/2 turn out did a lot to correct the richness of the off idle to low rpm, in city cruise range. It might need choke now on a cold start.

We had our buddy Jason the carb guru set up our RS 36's on the 80' GS 1100E. He said that they weren't very far off out of the box. We never touched the set of RS 34's on the KZ 1000, it runs great. When you only weigh 125lbs it keeps the 44yo bike right there in the pack. I've surprised a bunch of young riders with the fact that it may be an ugly 80's dinosaur but if you're not careful you'll be looking at my taillight. 8)
The 77' KZ 1000 with RS 34's is almost as quick but definitely wins every time on the cool factor. 8)

 Kelly, I hear that, when I finally got around to riding my KZ1000 it had a buyer coming. He wanted confirmation that he could ride it home, so I did a 20-mile road test. I liked it so much that I decided if he didn't buy it I was keeping it. He bought it, so when the chance to get the GS came along, I jumped on it. For $100 difference, I think it worked out.
