NOS Red Side Cover, Recently Broken????
« on: January 08, 2024, 05:36:48 PM »
Need some help here. Not long ago we had a new member posting about a 1971 cb750K1 that he had just purchased. It is a very nice machine, in lovely condition. Joined in and was looking for info. I believe he was in a Canada??

In one of his early posts he made the same mistake lots of us have experienced and broke his own side cover while trying to remove it. I remember saying “they do occasionally come up”. Anyone remember who that was? See photo. Stupid money, but hey…….

The only problem with "NOS" ABS plastic is that it still becomes brittle with age whether it's been installed or not. I bought a "new" sidecover around 1995 or so directly from the dealer for my K8. Some time ago that side cover split almost all the way down the middle trying to remove it for routine maintenance. I have FBStuff side covers that are head and shoulders above the stock pieces since his are cast in urethane. Good luck with the member search and kudos for the public service effort!  8)

Be sure that you replace the old grommets every 5 years.
Use a dab of silicone grease in the grommets.
Also, use a heat gun on each of the grommets to warm them up to make flexible before trying to remove the sidecovers. I do this especially on bikes I have just picked up to remove the old covers, then replace the grommets and use silicone grease.

The crazy thing about side covers. They were really tough to get from a local dealer in the 1980's. They might be easier to get today :-).

BenelliSEI,

That was probably me, I recently broke my right sight cover. I seen that post for the NOS cover as well. I also agree that it is a little pricey, however, after pricing paint and paying the painter, neither option is cheap. I really appreciate you remembering and your effort to help, THANKS
