Can you share pics with me?
« on: January 28, 2024, 07:21:33 PM »
Can anyone share pics with me if they have them of how the sprocket mounts to the engine on a CB550? The manuals seem like they used the 2001 version of babbelfish.com to translate from Japanese, and im going by blown up IPC's  online which aren't very helpful. I figured out how to rebuild the clutch and the workings of the clutch cover (I'm new to bikes and it was handed to me in a friggin bag). I replaced all those seals, appalled anyone would put this much work into the engine and assemble with old seals. Now I'm trying to figure out how the hell the stator cover is PROPERLY assembled with wire routing, and what everything aft of that is SUPPOSED to look like with the side cover off, how that mounting bracket which protects from chain jump is supposed to mount and all that. I'm having trouble finding anything and the search menu on the forum seems to be a rabbit hole. I know the starter mounts to that side of the motor, but I'm told the starter is still hanging on the bike and it's like, is that another o-ring I have to buy? Just trying to get some pics thanks gents

You can get the Honda Shop manual and parts list in English from here:
https://www.honda4fun.com/materiale/documentazione-tecnica
just scroll down to the 550 stuff.

There are different modle 550 so what year and modle would help
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Sorry, cant share pics as my 550 isnt currently at my home.

Ron put together an incredible thread as he was assembling his 550, this should answer any questions you have now and in the future. Hope this helps...

All 500/550's mount the same. Slide sprocket on splined shaft. Place collar on shaft and rotate until bolt holes line up. Then screw in the bolts.
The sprocket will wobble a bit but that's normal.

I guess my question is this...there appears to be the sprocket, a plate, and two bolts but if the plate and bolts mount to the sprocket, what the hell keeps the sprocket from falling off? Just trying to understand in my head. I got the stator cover figured out and cleaned/reassembled, along with the clutch cover (u ised an aviation cotter key but a steel one), so I mean I'm a federally licensed mechanic I can do mechanics. Just trying to figure it out in my head. Thanks for the pics tho! And yeah what keeps the sprocket on there if the bolts bolt to the sprocket itself and not the sprocket to something else?

The sprocket has course splines…

The two bolt sprocket retainer plate has course splines…

The output sprocket shaft has course splines and an alignment retainer groove..

“As mentioned above” after installing the retainer plate on the shaft splines you “must” rotate it to align the two holes in the plate with the two threaded holes in the sprocket. There is a groove that allows the retaining plate to rotate to align bolts. The shaft goove is machined to the bottom of the shaft splines but only the width of the retaining plate. Since you had to align the bolt holes after installing it on the shaft splines, means the splines in the retaining plate are no longer aligned with the sprocket shaft splines. When bolted to the sprocket the now misaligned splines in the shaft groove provides retention and alignment.  Think of a single snap ring that can prevent sprocket movement in or out....

And as already mentioned above, it may wobble a bit when properly mounted, depending on spline and shaft wear…

I think everyone remembers you’re a licensed aircraft mechanic from your frequent mentions..

I mention it frequently because I'm asking unbelievably amateur and stupid questions. When somebody asks me those types of questions, I want to know their mechanical acumen, because if they've never turned a wrench, my response is going to he totally different as to how to help them understand it to get the job done. I'm completely new to this and thrown in on a project up to my neck in. I'm not looking for a pat on the head from people I've never met, I'm looking for help. Thanks anyways for the help.

I did wind up figuring it out and I appreciate you and everyone for that so very much! There are splines that prevent the sprocket from rotating but with the notch the attachment plate misaligned with the splines after lining up with the mounting holes on the sprocket itself. But then...ugh THEN...

THEN I mock it up, decide "ok gonna take this back apart and clean and inspect everything before final assembly" and realize the splines on the plate that bolts to the sprocket are...well...quite worn and chewed up. Does that warrent replacement? Or nah it'll be fine?

Critical area I would say, (I wouldn't want the sprocket coming off and slapping the casings), if you think there is any chance of the sprocket coming loose, then I would try to find a replacement.
